Ok I'm going to ask a dumb question. So someone here local has a new Guild jumbo case that has the alligator shell. It was given to him but he doesn't have a jumbo so he's selling it for $100. Here's the question, When did Guild start putting Humidifiers in there cases? This one does't have one. The closest thing I see to this case on the website is the Premium case but they all have humidifiers. I guess the real question is, is this case authentic?

The New Hartford era premium jumbo cases have no humidifiers in them (they started in Oxnard), and for me, that's just as well. If you misuse those in-case humidifiers (that are nothing but sponges), you can damage the finish on your guitar. I humidify my whole house, so I don't need them.

$100 is a fair price for that case if you need one.

Let me clarify, I don't believe he is trying to cheat me or be dishonest at all. I just find it strange that the new cases on Guild's website has the humidifier and this one doesn't. That being said I just found a case that is exactly the same online that is listed as a humidified case. Now I'm really confused.

Ok, Thanks! That clears that up. I'm going to buy it tomorrow.

The cases are made by two different manufacturers, and I'd argue that the New Hartford era TKL premium case is a better case.

Humicase. I think they're owned by Cordoba Music Group.
Yes, Oxnard made Guilds are shipped in the Humicase cases which are owned by CMG and are produced in China ("Designed in California").
New Hartford and before Tacoma and Corona used TKL cases made in Canada I believe.

If that has the alligator finish and green crushed velour interior I would love to get my paws on one. Those are really nice cases.

"Designed in California" is code for "Made in China" or worse, that's for sure. TKL cases are all made in Canada as far as I know, and even the lower end three latch cases are pretty nice. Definitely a notch or two above the Humicase my D40 Traditional came in.

I have one that @70man got for the '70 D50 I have, and it is very nice. I also have a very good condition (what would have been) OEM for that guitar that I bought long ago, and as proper as it is, the TKL case is a much snugger fit.

Yup.
TKL is my go-to brand most of the time.
I think that a humidifier isn't really needed in a case if the top fits very tightly and securely. The guitar doesn't lose very much moisture in such a case, and a stable humidity level is, to me, better than shocking a guitar with too much humidity then allowing it to dry out to suddenly when it's played a lot after being stored for a long time.

A humidifier isn't the most important part of any case. The hardshell cases are built to protect the guitar, and to buffer all the shocks and bumps the guitar gets whenever it's being transported. That's TKL- their cases always fit a guitar very well, don't allow water to creep inside, and all the latches are always top quality and latch accurately. They're tough and can take a lot of abuse.

There are more expensive cases, and more protective cases, but TKL is more than adequate in their protection, and are a good value.

The company began at a time when a lot of the American case makers were going out of the business, and their early cases weren't as good as they are now, but they were still good enough that Gibson used them as their standard as did Guild and Martin.
The company actually listened and learned from those maker's input, and soon began building much better cases for the same price.
The weakest part of the old line were the handles. Everything else was always pretty good right from the first.

So I finally got with the person selling the case. It’s brand new. I thought for $100 I can’t go wrong. The spots you see on top of the case is dog slobbers. They think everything is either suspicious or belongs to them.

It's interesting to me that Guild cases often fit hard-to-fit other guitars.
I own a Tama prototype Macaferri guitar that fit in a standard dreadnought case tightly, but I was able to buy a used Guild case a music store owner got in a batch of stuff on a closeout that fit perfectly.
I don't know what model it was made for, but it came with a Guild badge on it.

And when I went looking for a new case for my Artist Award, I found the same was true with it; a standard jumbo case wouldn't fit the length of the guitar. They were all about 1" too short. I contacted TKL to try to find the case, as I knew they made them for Guild, and through them, I finally located a new case.
That case was made to fit Guild Jumbo 12-strings too. The difference is in the length of the neck area of the case- it's about 1 1/2" longer, while the body area is the same as the cases they make for other brands.

Finding that case was actually a lot harder than buying the guitar. The guitar came from a close dealer who's a 30-year friend. He called me up to learn something about them and I said I wanted it. A done deal in about 5 minutes flat!
That's often the way it goes with us. He's sold guitars for me, and I've bought/swapped with him for a very long time. But we are friends foremost, and make music together whenever we can.
