Fungie, Hans is going to tear you a new one for referencing that list. :) :)

thumbs, I don't have Hans Moust's book handy ("The Guild Guitar Book"), but that's the best reference for dating. If no one pipes up before then, I'll have a look tonight when I'm back home.

Man, I don't know about you guys, but today is WAY too nice a day for me to be wasting in the office! :( :(

I know this list is far from flawless, but that serial # appears to be a '73.

That section of the serial number list is fine. The troubles begin at the end of 1979.

So, 1973 it is! That's a mahogany top ......... right?

Now I'm confused. I thought the arch-back D25's had Spruce tops.

Anyway, my 1972 (that I bought in 1973), has a flat back and a
Mahogany top.

So was there an evolution? First they made arched backs & kept the
Hog tops? Then they moved to Spruce tops from the hog tops and kept
the arched backs?

I'm going to see about getting a D-25 domain today.

Yeah, apparently they made some all-mahogany archbacks during the transition, although there aren't many of them. I'd like to play one some time. I suspect they sound real nice but probably not quite as bright tonally as the spruce topped archbacks.

Hello marcellis,

When I was doing the research for the Guild book I was told by the people who worked at the Guild factory during that particular era, that the change from flat back to arched back took place around 1976, together with the change from mahogany top to spruce top. With only a limited amount of D-25s to look at that info ended up in the book.
After looking at many more D-25s I've come to the conclusion that the change from flat back to arched back actually took place during 1973 and the change from mahogany top to spruce top took place about a year later in 1974. There was a short overlap during which you would find combinations of both but by 1975 all D-25s had spruce tops, which were stained a darker color for the most part.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Thanks Hans. As always, it's an honor to have you here,
You're a real historian, very precise, very careful...authoritative.

I checked out a few D-25 domain names.

The place I went wanted $269 to register a domain for
Guild D-25's. There were a lot of different names I used.
None were taken. But .com, .org, it was all the same.
$269.

Does anyone know a cheap place to buy domains?

Thanks. It's a lot cheaper there. A LOT!

I'll register something tonight or tomorrow.

If any D-25 owners want to volunteer their web design services,
it would help move the project along considerably.

I see it as a place where people can post photos and write about
their D-25's.

I'd guess not. Marc has had internet connection problems from SE Asia. He has not logged in for a couple of months as well.
