Guild Doctor Needed!

Hi all,

My baby, a 1976 G37Bld is sick. The consensus is that they problem is in her neck and that she needs to see a specialist. The problem is that my long-time Guild Doc (Rob Zwally) decided to retire after only 50 years repairing guitars, so I'm looking for a new Guild PCP in the Lancaster, PA area.

Given the issue with my old gal, I do not want to take her just to any shop and hope that they know what they are doing (and have the proper respect and admiration for this fine cougar of a guitar).

Recommendations welcome and appreciated.

If you're in PA, perhaps one of our NJ or Philly members can advise you.

Also, don't know how far you are from Martin, but Frank Untermyer there used to be a Guild employee in New Hartford and he might know some luthiers near you.

Good luck in the hunt.

I don't know if you're on LinkedIn, but perhaps you can reach Frank this way. Tell him Charlie from LTG says hi!

Sorry that I don't know anyone in the area for you. BUT, when my cherished Guild was injured, there was no one I'd entrust it to, but our own Tom Jacobs (@Fixit) at Jacobs Custom Guitars in Merritt Island Florida. I know it's shipping but I knew my guitar was in good hands. Talking with Tom and his lovely wife during the process was wonderful and the repair was phenomenal!! Shipping, yeah... but worth it. In a big city like Lancaster you should have options, but if not, try this:

I'm sure many others will back me up on this!! (y)

Philly is going to be a 2 hour drive (one way). The closest guy I would start with near you would be to call Al at West Chester Music and see what he says. He is a Guild dealer AFAIK, and once did a neck reset on an old Gretsch for me. That's still about an hour down Rt 30 for you, but it's closer than Philly.

I havent seen the guy in 20 years though so can't offer a recent testimonial, though he was always fair with me in the past. His shop used to be within a few miles of me (the old Swarthmore Music) but he's a bit out of my way now.

Good luck!

Checking around Lancaster, it seems that Lancaster Musical Instrument gets a lot of good reviews on Google.

If it's a big repair, I would send it to Tom Jacobs in FL as long as you're comfortable packing one up. Tom gets a good discount with UPS, and his wife Delyne will generate a shipping label for you and add the shipping to the bill. It cost me about $80 round trip, which was about half what FedEx Ground wanted through my account.

I'm lucky to have an ex guild service center luthier in my town. He isn't now due to Guild's labor rates. Hope you find someone, but I'd do the Mr. Fixit route if I didn't have my guy.
