So my friend from my soccer team is playing drums in a band with two guys (brothers) who were in a pretty legendary Australian band called Mental as Anything. This outfit is called Dog trumpet & they've been around for a while in their own right (20 odd years). Well they have a new album out & an accompanying film clip & waddyaknow, a Starfire bass is being used - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZt1J8d9YEE

I also just noticed that the guitarist on the left is Bernie Hayes, who is a well loved solo performer in his own right and also sang backup on a couple of songs on an album I did a few years back.

Cool song. Not only is the Starfire bass in the song, it dominates.

Interesting. Looks to be a "sweet spot" '65 or '66. Never seen one in black but no reason to doubt originality.

The Department of Redundancy Department?

Trying to make sure we're saying the same thing or whether you know something (about Starfire basses) that I don't and should. Straight bridge was in use from inception ~1965 until BA-145x (plus or minus a few since I am going by memory and basses were not made and released sequentially anyway) which is sometime in 1967, well after the move from the sweet spot.

frono,

When I wrote, 'bass has old tailpiece', it meant just that. It also meant that I had been up all day and was too tired to even use a Capital letter or a period mark at 12:26 am. It also looks like it has the black plastic saddles. Is that too redundant for you?

I listened to video, as well as another one with that same bass & bass player in it. On the other video, there is a 3 second shot of the back of the neck and you can see where the black finish is worn off. Didn't see another finish underneath, either.

Can't tell if the Chesterfield inlay has fallen out or not. Froze some screen shots and still couldn't tell.

I think that guy has been playing that bass for a long time. He and the drummer were really working well together:

Yeah, very grimey, I kept on thinking they must have blacked it out on purpose, somewhere down the line!

Sounds like there's a pretty saturated octaver or a bass fuzz somewhere on the signal path. Makes it nice warm and mushy. Also hides little timing problems neatly ;)
