Although this craft never left the atmosphere (it was a training vessel for ground and flight testing) it hitched a ride aboard a 747 Shuttle Carrier bound for the Intrepid Sea Air and Space Museum in New York.

I understand the mechanics of flight however it never ceases to amaze me...
P.S. Note the additional vertical stabilizer on the ends of the horizontal stabilizer (the tail) of the 747.

Yeah, I worked on jet aircraft in the Navy but it still amazes me how much thrust those engines have to develop to get those big boys off the ground.

After the final shuttle landing at Edwards AFB, “Discovery” was returned to KSC on Monday, September 21, 2009. After refueling at the Fort Worth Naval Station they flew directly over my house. I heard the roar of jet engines that were much louder than normal so I knew the by the sound that it was at a fairly low altitude. I went out into the backyard and there she was being piggybacked atop a 747, probably less than 2k feet above my head. It was a sight to behold!! I watched as it climbed higher and gazed mesmerized until she flew out of sight.

We went out to Sandy Hook to do some birding on Friday. As we pulled into the first parking lot we saw a bunch of people up on the sea wall looking torward the ocean but up in the air. We then saw the plane and shuttle. We ran from the car with our binoculars. Amy got this pic on her cell phone.

The timing was amazing, two minutes either way and we would have missed it!

We noticed that they flew up the east river a ways before heading east out to JFK.

I was on the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station when this rig took off from Kennedy Space Center. It flew right over our heads at about a thousand feet, and was a pretty awsome sight. I had seen it in the past several times comming in for a landing from various missions, but never this close. On another note. There was quite a few comments in the group I was in about, a lot of jobs flying away. It's always this way at the end of a program at NASA. I got to see it in 1971 as well at the end of Appolo. We are all waiting to see what and when the next U.S endevor in space will be :?: Until then the communities around here and many other places that support NASA have to tighten their belts and hope we don't lose too much of the talent that makes these kind of things possible.

I saw a story on 60 Minutes about the massive decline of the Florida Space Coast. Very sad for all involved.

I saw that too. We've lost a lot, but things are not as grim as 60 minutes made it look. As with so many news stories, it was over-done.

I think the industry is changing from governmental to private, I've seen the small venture companies positioning for a breakout in demand that is sure to follow.

As soon as a private company starts to have some success the government will start to regulate it.
