It seems as Gorgomyte has gone off the market, ot maybe sold by GHS but complaints that it isn't the same.

Seems it was the brainchild of Jimmy johnson, Alex Lifeson's personal roadie from 1968 on, later toured with Styx, had quite a bio. Passed away in 2019.

At any rate, I haven't been able to buy any, and it was damned expensive anyway.

Succumbing to a GAS attack, as usual I received some old thing, a higher priced orphan, with ancient DNA stuck, or is that actually bonded, to the Rosewood board, a guitar little played, most higher frets never used much, but still adorned with fossilized schmundo as described in the Ritchie Flieger guitar maintenance book from many years ago.

What to do without Gorgomyte?

I know from personal experience that this stuff can withstand most cleaners, even when applied with tons on elbow grease.

I noticed StewMac has Miracle Cloth instead, now with Coconut Oil, the older packages said with Lemon Oil.

So, necessity being a mother, I made my own Gorgomyte cloth by working some Coconut oil - a solid at room temp - into some old T shirt cotton material, maybe not quite aggressive enough.

And so I went to work on this 22 fret fingerboard, and as expected, it started removing the old skin/grime deposits, visibly, but slowly.

20 minutes and I was done, following it up with some F1 oil.

It wasn't as aggressive as a real Gorgomyte cloth, and the cloth didn't turn pure black, so it didn't polish the frets quite as well, but it got rid of the fingerboard grime completely, and that's quite an accomplishment for something you can make in your own kitchen in a couple minutes.

The board feels smooth now, completely different, like played in guitar.

Wondering what the exact formula of the Gorgomyte cloth was?

Coconut oil has Lauric Acid, which might be what makes it so good at cleaning - try it on jar label glues, you'll be amazed - and it is antimicrobial, which is a good idea when cleaning someone else's deposit from a fingerboard, no matter how old.

If it was still in production you could have gotten an SDS.

You can buy Gorgomyte with coconut oil on their website currently. Not sure if you're saying it's NOT available or what's available is not the old formula, but it's there.

Coconut oil is also great as a night time whole body moisturizer. I started using it after a recent surgery for the antimicrobial properties, and to soften the scars.

It was no longer available on Reverb, I'm not much into shopping on websites, having to enter card info, actually got zapped by a fake site a few years ago, a close call.

Edit, checked out the site, which has PPal checkout so I bought 2.

Seems like a waste though, unless I buy more guitars ;[]

Yes, we have the solution, alcohol ;[]

Honestly, I've never had to clean my own fingerboards much, maybe I don't play enough, or my hands are too clean, but at string changes, my own boards look perfect, and I usually only change one string at a time.

I'm not the best player, still slowly learning, and improving, but I love working on guitars. I wish I was working at a guitar store, or buying/selling enough of them to keep at it everyday, but that ship has sailed.

This doesn’t look like an official OSHA-type SDS but..looks like wax, lemon oil, mineral oil. pumice, water/ammonia solution?
Wouldn’t Ronsonal work just as good?

If you mean lighter fluid, not even close, and it will dry out the board.

Btw, that must be a very old MSDS, because the original formula was lemon oil, now it's coconut oil.

Wonder who's in charge of MSDS sheets, or if they're just made up by the manufacturer?

OSHA don’t use Msds any more, at least not in my industry. Now they are called SDS and they are like 16 pages long for one thing.

I'm a big fan of these...highly recommended! (Cleans and conditions!)

<--- that's 20 wipes for like $7.00 !!! Several years worth for the average player!

Ultra affordable, and lasts a long time. I use it every time I change strings. One wipe can easily treat 7-8 guitars, and if I'm only changing strings on 1-2 guitars, I put the wipe back in it's pouch and put it in a ziplock bag to keep it moist and reuse it. If you keep your fretboard well conditioned, dirt/grime/oils from your hands will be less likely to penetrate it and occasional deep fretboard scrub downs will be largely unnecessary. If I remember correctly, it contains linseed oil.
