Ok....so I ain't the most technical savy person on this board, but here's what I use to keep my honey wet and happy:

Cost: Travel soap dish: 49 cents and it's available in lots of purdy colours
Sponge: 0 (stolen from my wife's stash in the kitchen..."Honey, have you seen the new blue sponge I bought last week?"....." Ummmm....sorry....no I haven't"

Ok...cut the sponge to about 1/4" larger than the dish. Drill plenty of holes in the top of the dish, try to keep the pattern somewhat consistent as this makes for a more professional looking Shempumidifier but actually does nothing to enhance the performance of the unit. Keep the sponge nice and moist with your favourite water...and there you go.

You can place it in the body compartment for more humidity...or in the neck compartment for a bit less.

Note: do not travel with the Shempumidifier in the case (they're not leak proof...only use in the flat position). I've also found the Shempumidifier handy at gigs and open mics ... if you feel faint from nerves you can apply the sponge to your forehead for instant revival... or if there is a heckler in the crowd you can wing it at him and shut him down (careful though, the sponge can and will travel in BOTH directions.

Change the sponge monthly or as needed. Anyhow...works for me and as always, I'm just sayin...

+1 on the shempumidifier. For those brief periods when I'm concerned re: humidity I use a couple of plastic, travel toothbrush holders with a damp sponge inside. I've got a string tied to one end so it makes it easy to fish out of the guitar. Feeback buster over the sound hole. Done. Total investment less than $2.00.

Yep.

But given the number of times people move basses in cases at Casa Fronobulax, something that risks loose water when moved just is not worth it to me. What's $20 for a sealed humidifier for a $600+ instrument?

Excellent point. I couldn't agree with you more, a sealed humidifier is a wonderful invention and a superb investment. But the pleasure I get when I open my case and see my 49 cent Shempumidifier doing it's job...well....it speaks of the foundation that our country (ummm...you are american, si?) was built upon. In fact it I may change the name of it to the "Reaganumidifier" or the "JohnGlennumidifier", or even...dare I say it....the "EleanorRooseveltumidifier". It reminds me of the spirit that swept across this country when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor. But I digress...

Seriously, point well taken, which is why my Shempumidifier is only for home use and never travels with me.

I make the improved model.
Instead of a sponge, I cut to fit a piece of Oasis Floral Foam.
Get it at a craft store.
It's a lot better at holding the water and doesn't leak.
The water also lasts longer between re-fills.
I buy a gallon of distilled water and add a quarter ounce of bleach for mold protection.
The foam lasts at least 1 year before I need to replace it.

nah. I ain't gonna finish it.

Actually I have used something similar to the Shempumidifier for other applications, just not basses in cases that get moved every time the house gets cleaned, if not more often.

I'm too cheap to buy a soap dish. I use a plastic sandwich bag with a few slices cut into it. It just means that the sponge can't be dripping wet. The money I save I spend on twinkies. :)

Ditto on the plastic sandwich bag.
Yes, I've used Fred's Patented, GLAD BAG Humidifier.(As Seen on TV) ...works like a charm, especially if you go to the local Dollar Store and pick up eight sponges for two bucks....
