We didn't have them when I started in the late 50s/early 60s, so what's the problem?

It happens in nature. I used to know a bluegrass guy who insisted we were all crazy for keeping the treble strings so far away.

Alternate tunings, persons who flip, but don't re-string their guitars, persons who do, persons who play guitars on their laps, persons who play while sitting, or play while standing or play guitar in addition to playing an harmonica at the same time, or play with or without picks, with only some or only all fingers plus whatever other variations GGJ indoubtedly has photos of, would all seem to me to indicate that whichever way it's done, as an end to making music, is equally valid.
