Vintage Guild issues to look out for:

Binding rot
Headstock veneer shrinkage
Neck angles
Excessive mojo :)

These pretty much apply across the board. No one has ever made the statistical case that one or more of these are more likely to occur in a guitar from a particular year, or from a particular factory (keeping in mind the word "vintage" and presuming that however it is defined, you are pretty much talking Westerly, Hoboken and NYC) or with a particular model.

I wasn't trying to make a statistical case, just reporting on the things I look for when looking at vintage Guilds. Sadly, we're rapidly approaching a day when all Guild electrics will be "vintage".

I've got an impending NGD from a Guitar Center of all places and I think you guys are going to like it....

I'm new so don't know the etiquette- does this warrant a new thread?

You weren't the target so perhaps my phrasing could have been improved. An awful lot of people want to know what years and models to avoid and while that generalization might work with cars or Gibsons, it does not work with Guilds. The "prejudice" against certain car models from certain years is rooted in statistics, for example.

You're in a good area to find Hoboken Guilds. I constantly look through Craigslist (some people are addicted to facebook.....I'm addicted to Craigslist) and I see more Guilds in the metro NY area than anywhere else. You will see them all around, though. Just type Guild and check the "in title" box and you'll expand the area being searched.

Also, if you have not already done this, go to the Vintage section of Guitar Center. I've found tons of guitars in there that you can do the generic guitar search and they won't come up.

I expect you'll find something in driving distance if you're willing to drive a couple hundred miles. I am exactly like you in that I want to play a guitar before I buy it.

Happy hunting!
