Recently saw a sales receipt from 1978

The item sold was a Guild D55, solid rosewood with Guild case.

so, how much do you think the receipt is for

I will let you know how much exactly in a few days

Free slice of chocolate cake to the nearest guesstimate

No interweb trawling and answer in £UK please

OK, coming back and editing since I missed the request to answer in £UK.

I'll go 700 £UK.

$875 USD was list for a D55 back then (1978), but have no idea what the exchange rate was in '78.

Those were the days that guitars were not sold with huge discounts; maybe 10% if you were a good customer or at least that was the situation in the Netherlands!

Consequently the selling price for a new D-55 in the UK may have been somewhere around £UK 500 and the case would have been an additional £UK 50, but the list price on both would have been a little higher than that; and unfortunately there was the additional VAT.

Edit: I did make that trip to London several times, just to look at guitars that were not in stock in music stores over here in the Netherlands. I could not afford a new guitar at that time and I was already importing 'used' guitars from the U.S.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

My 1972 G-37 was $375 USD out the door with Guild case in 1972

My guess is $750 USD

Well if the exchange rate was 2 to 1 in '78, wouldn't that make list for a D55 back then around $1250? But you didn't say "list" did you, you asked for what was on the receipt. I cheated the other night and actually found a '78 Guild price list, and on that price list/catalog, list in '78 for a D55 was $875 USD. 😊 But it's ok, I can't eat cake anyway.
