I think one of the several reasons plumbers switched to PEX was they couldn't keep copper on job sites. Thieves were carrying off copper like crazy........ripping it out of the walls of houses under construction, stealing copper air conditioning coils, you name it. To me, one of the beauties of PEX is it's ability to swell when frozen and return to normal diameter without bursting. No doubt for plumbers, it's much easier to work with. My only concern was PEX getting brittle over time, but it has a 50 year guarantee,

There was also a lot of hesitation early on as the original pex had recalls and class action suits. That original version was discontinued and I haven’t heard of any issues since. Only place I wouldn’t use it is in a seasonal cabin or farmhouse, as rodents can chew right through the stuff. In a suburb, that or cpvc is all I would use nowadays. All the plumbing repairs I do is either copper (in commercial kitchens) or in residential I convert from copper to cpvc w/ shark bite adaptors.

Last week, I realized I had a leaking line behind my washing machine. Honestly, how often does one check behind their washing machine?
A local restoration company came out, gave me an estaminet, and I contacted my insurance company to make a claim. The restorers came and tore out the drywall, repaired the leak, and set up drying equipment for the weekend. This morning, the restoration guys are here to install new drywall and paint.

I am pleased with how quickly everything has been done.

Inspect the plumbing in your home frequently.
......And now, back to our regularly scheduled program.

Last week, I realized I had a leaking line behind my washing machine.
In my case, I noticed water puddled on the cement floor in the garage (where the washer is located). At first, I assumed that it was a failing inlet hose (a not all that uncommon eventuality) but saw that the source was inside the wall behind the machine. Turned out that the jackass who plumbed the line had strapped the copper pipe to the stud with a galvanized hanger. Over the course of many years, galvanic corrosion resulted due to the direct contact of the dissimilar metals, eventually eating a pinhole in the copper pipe.

Any plumber would know to not do this. I could almost imagine what had happened. It was "beer:30" on a Friday afternoon and there was only one last thing to do. He looked in his box of fittings only to find that he didn't have a 50¢ copper strap. But he did have a galvanized one. "What the hell: I'll be long gone by the time this causes a problem". So he used the improper strap and probably even chuckled to himself as he did, knowing what it would do. Who knows? Maybe he was pissed at his boss. Years later, I have to mop up the water, open the wall, repair the pinhole, replace the hanger with a copper one and repair the sheetrock, when the whole thing never would've happened, but for an unprofessional, inconsiderate plumber who didn't deserve his license.

I do everything..except gas lines and hvac. I do concrete, block and brick, framing, doors/windows, siding ,roofing, plumbing, electric, drywall, paint, cabinet, tile, wood floors, you name it. My forte is in high end kitchens and bathrooms. Custom tile work especially. I worked for myself for many years, but got tired of homeowners and endless add ons. For the last 15 yrs I’ve been the “do everything guy” for one person that owns a waterfront restaurant/marina, 3 construction companies (asphalt and concrete) plus 7-8 rental properties. I take care of it all, plus his and his family’s houses.

Sounds like a full plate for sure. I guess I understand plumbing from the 40 years spent in mechanical maintenance and all the associated piping and tubing.

The restoration guys are back to finish today. They neglected to purchase enough paint on Monday. I'll be glad to return everything to normal.

One of the guys, a young man, was listening to his Hip Hop/Rap music on his phone Monday. So today, I thought I would jam out to some rock and roll. Music education!
