If you only write one page per model that would be a much much bigger book! (Including electrics, classicals, banjos, mandolines,...) And you would have to write about the different factories in all the different countries...

Ralf
Don't scare him! Otherwise he won't write the book. :)

When we sold Madeiras, Martin was selling their Sigma guitars, which were pretty comparable. I remember talking to a Martin rep at a trade show, and he said flat out; "Those Sigmas kept us afloat when our quality was in the pits and we were struggling to get back on our feet."

What does that mean anyway? Adjust what? Adjusted where?

Just curious...

Getting back to the original question, I think "adjusted" means they were set-up in the US if needed, but the term "set-up" wasn't widely recognized at the tie, unlike '83 when I helped my brother buy a Fender MIJ F-210 flattop which proudly proclaimed "Set up by Fender in the USA-Solid spruce top" on the box.

Read post #4, second picture explains it.

@DrumBob. Not sure you'd know for sure but I was told when I bought the Madeira A-2 that Guild supplied the parts and they were assembled in Japan.

Looking at the maple on my two Madeiras they sure look like the necks and laminate could have been. The back of that P 600 above rivals some of the prettiest I've seen....

Any idea?

First-gens were made in Japan, second-gens were made in Korea. IIRC, the Korean ones used parts supplied by Guild. Had a buddy with one and the headstock was a giveaway.

Madeira was a Guild owned foreign made line of guitars that was most commonly made in Japan during the 70s and eventually they made them in Korea throughout most of the 80s. The 70s models were actually quite solid guitars especially for foreign made guitars at the time. They didn’t necessarily correspond to a US Guild model like GADs or the more recent Westerly collection.

The problem I always have is that I find them hard to play due to really small frets but other than that they’re solid for the price.

I doubt that was true. They were Korean guitars with Korean parts. And a lot of Korean problems!

My previous post may have been about NS and not GAD's, but I stand by what my "inside source" had related...

In any event, this thread makes me think of "Have some Maderia my dear..." WHO did that song? Driving me nuts!
