Sadly no L. Shankar. :(

Maybe John Scofield is a sort of consolation prize. ;)

The Story of Shakti for the youngins. Hey .... not everyone here is a geezer, and like ... 50 years ago ... well like ... wow. Where did the time go?

Shakti was McLaughlin's favourite group. It is one of the few groups he worked with where he doesn't look bored. It is one of few groups in which he actually had to sweat it, working hard, rather than coasting on technique and chops, because if he didn't push himself Shankar and Hussain would have cut him to pieces. McLaughlin always looks happy and energised in any footage I have seen of this group.

Violinist, L. Shankar, is brilliant on his own, and as a foil he brings out the very best in McLaughlin.

McLaughlin was one of the few western musicians able to interact with Indian musicians and hold his own while playing on their terms. He could also draw them in and accommodate them on his terms.

As the documentary explains, McLaughlin's composition, Two Sisters (written for Katia and Marielle Labèque, the French Classical pianists), is a Raga in its melodic/modal form and could function as a Raga, but McLaughlin keeps harmonising and re-harmonising it, dropping Jazz inflected chords under it, causing the tone and emotional feeling of the Raga to shift hauntingly. Great stuff.

The Story of Shakti (1 hour and 17 minutes)

Sadly there is a bit of wow and flutter in the playback of the tape source. It is not so noticeable with voices in the interviews, but with the music it gives a bit of a really cheap 80s chorus pedal effect to everything, marring some otherwise stellar musicianship.

Wish I had known, though I really do not know if I would have done a reservation...Interesting concept those live acts being watched from home...I think it was expensive though. It's the first paying one I see. National French radio had done some live classical concerts broadcasted in cinemas too...
I think going to a concert is something else though, as people may meet each others, share some time together and some emotions too, including without knowing each others before... I hope it will remain. Shakti has counted a lot for me (best concert's memory still possibly)<.
