An interesting promotional concept - streaming to movie theatres around the globe.

Opera and Shakesperian (and other) theatre have for quite sometime extended their audience reach and revunues by doing this. Now we have Metalica using the same technology to host a release party for their new album.

+1. That is an entertaining documentary, particularly the storyline of deciding on a new bass player.

Yes! There are a number of hilarious moments in the film, including that one.

I never realized how much a phenomenon the band is, popularity-wise, and just how many people (probably in the hundreds?) rely on the continuing success of that juggernaut for their livlihoods.

It's a fascinating, well-made documentary, with many laugh-out-loud moments.

I do not much like Metalica, except perhaps for Enter Sandman, which is amusing.

I own none of the their recordings.

But I do know people, some of them friends and some of these friends highly skilled musicians for whom I have great respect, who do like Metalica very much. And I have played some of Metalica's tunes with some of these people.

Metalica are and continue to be very popular, and given their popularity, it is probable that there are people who visit this site who also like Metalica.

I posted the link to the launch party because I thought the concept/format of the event was interesting. I had read a story about the party in a small local online newspaper which was drawing attention to a movie theatre which would be linked to the party. I also thought any members who like Metalica might be interested in the event itself.

I apologise for not having initially posted an Allergy Trigger Alert. Sorry.

Oh well .... better late than never. ;)

Warning:
The original post above may contain gluten, nuts, shellfish, ragweed pollen, and popularity, as well as musical substance which some may find distasteful. Parental guidance and supervision is advised. ;)

No explanation necessary Canard, and certainly you've nothing to apologize for. The band's prowess as virtuoso musicians is widely recognized.

While I'm not into their music -- and that's just me -- I do find them a fascinating phenomenon, and the idea of doing an album "reveal" / release party in theaters is, so far as I know, unprecedented, and a testament to the immense popularity of the band.

I'm sure there will be LTGers who are interested.

No slight intended!

If an LTGer has no interest in Metallica they can skip the thread! There are several topics I ignore myself.

No apologies for posting an interesting development in how to market your music!

BTW, the other entertaining scene that I enjoyed was Lars selling some of his artwork. I've never purchased their music either, but behind the scenes they are more than just headbangers...

Me, too, actually.

No slight intended!

None taken. Hence the ;)

I am thicker skinned than that.

Just offering up an ironic reminder that this site caters to a wide variety of tastes in music, pretty much anything/everything that can or has been played on guitar and other stringed musical instruments and then off into music in general.

I do not personally like all of these musics or the musicians who play them, nor do I expect others will or should either.

I bite my tongue (or keyboard) quite often.

I did not listen to that genre of music but was in a band for a while and the other guitarist was a huge fan.
They have great guitar players. And I still like Sandman song. I know it's more of their poppy stuff, but it rocks.
I remember watching the MTV awards when Metallica played that live and totally nailed it, and you could see how psyched the main guy was the bank pulled it off perfectly.

I would like to think most adults fully realize that art is 100% subjective. It either grabs you or it doesn't. I too own zero Metallica albums, but LOTS of my friends do. They didn't sell 125 million records and selling out stadiums by accident. I do respect their talents. I would also hope, as adults, that folks can easily rise above ever feeling personally slighted if an artist gets a negative comment. I personally don't feel negative comments about artists should be deleted by mods. To me they are no different that discussions about ice cream flavors. If someone deems something tasteless, that imo says more about the poster than the subject at hand. I certainly take no offense. When I was 16, I would argue all day w/ friends about who is better...Page, Hendrix, EVH, Bonham, Peart, etc. That was 40 years ago. Means nothing to me anymore. I too just skip threads about artists I care less about. What's the point in even chiming in?

Clever way to make some money on a new record ! It'll be interesting to see what people come up with in the coming years now that rreleasing albums costs artists money instead of making money.

I will observe that in general bashing a musician is discouraged but expression personal opinions on music is encouraged. I have seen a lot of negative opinions but nothing that requires moderation. Maybe self-moderation is one of the reasons LTG is such an unusual place?

the idea of doing an album "reveal" / release party in theaters is, so far as I know, unprecedented

That brought a sense of deja vu. In the days before ubiquitous internet and associated streaming, movie theaters were looking for ways to make more money. I have a vague recollection of events that were happening live and in real time somewhere but were "broadcast" to theaters. You needed a ticket and the only way to "see" the event was to go to it or go to a theater that had joined the network.

I also remember many times during the isolation period of Covid where musicians would stream an activity to people at home.

So while hosting a release party in a movie theater is innovative there might be precedents.

I recall that some of Ali's matches were shown live in theaters. Probably other big sporting events too?

Apologizing for/retracting silly previous comment.

They had a number of songs I liked, plus this is full on nostalgia.

This is just one of them.

first two albums were greatness. Once Mustaine was out (and started Megadeth), Metallica got soft. Mustaine was out of Metallica before the second album (Ride the Lightning), but his writing and playing is all over that album, much or all of it uncredited. First three Megadeth albums blew my mind in a serious way...as a 10 year old!

Thanks for posting, since I am an LTGer that DOES like Metallica, and most rockin' heavy metal bands. Though I won't be going to a movie theater anytime soon, I will likley nab their upcoming CD, since new music is always fun to explore. 🤘

Definitive. I wonder how much impact this had on Kurt, the simplicity.

Too many memories? Frisson for me, before the chorus.
