I would like to get a new case for my 1998 Starfire 4. The one that came with it, while a Guild branded case, fits too snug, side to side, and it seems there is too much of an angle to where the neck is supposed to ride. I would guess the case is too deep and the neck support should be lower. Has anyone tried the fit of a mid 90s SF in a new case to see how they fit ? The Starfire case is listed as " out of stock ", at the Guild store page.

According to mavuser and others the 90's Starfire bass is not as fat/thick (top to bottom) as a 60's or a NS Starfire bass. I'm pretty sure we concluded that a 90's bass would fit in a NS case but not the other way around. I know you are asking about guitars but there are several times in Guild's history when they made the point that the bass and guitar bodies were of identical dimensions. So, this should be helpful until you get a better answer :)

I think GAD mentioned the size changes in his Blog. Mine is 1-9/16th inches thick. I would say the lower bout is very close to 16-1/2" ( Hard to measure over the knobs ) and the upper bout is 12".

What I want to "fix" is that the case is deep enough that it really teeter totters on the neck support. I wonder if putting a towel under the lower bout would level it and keep the headstock from trying to rise out of the case ? I worry that by closing the case, the headstock is lifting the whole guitar.

If the neck support area is acting as a fulcrum I'd definitely pad the body compartment with a towel or two. You don't want to be putting stress on the neck.

I own a number of older guitars with original cases where the padding material has compressed over the years. I keep some of those guitars in newer cases but for others I just supplement the existing case padding.
