Offered at $2300.00, very clean looking. Been buying goods at Gryphon for years, very reliable and honest. The only place locally besides CB Perkins in San Jose that I would trust to work on my guitars. Besides, it's Frank Ford's home base (see frets.com for everything you wanted to know about stringed instrument repair and restoration). The last time Gryphon had a Guild archtop for sale a few months ago it was an AA burst, super clean for $4200. It was gone in a few days. This X700 looks much the same at a reasonable price for a retail shop. Don't see many of these blondes offered for sale anymore. I plan to stop in next week to see it in person if it's still there and check it out.

Dang, I think I wet myself. That's a heck of a good price too. 3 ply binding on the f-holes and what, 9 on the top? Who does than anymore?

Checked it out this afternoon. The usual minor dings and gold plating wear for a vintage instrument, but in good health. The action is a bit high for my taste, but there is still plenty of bridge adjustment remaining, an easy fix. Appears to have all original equipment. No checks, cracks, separations, etc. The neck tiger stripe is stunning. The back plate figuring is OK, I would have expected more on such a high end guitar. The spruce top is beautiful with a very even grain structure and honey color. Sounds very nice too. Who ever buys it is getting a winner. I can't justify it 'cause I already have an X500. Too bad..... :D

That guitar gives me a hard-on. Too bad I'm broke. I'd love one like that.

Pre-Benedetto and priced right probably reflecting the depressed economic markets. Now is the time to pick up on world class guitars at affordable (or more-affordable I should say) prices.

That'll be another one that got away, to me. :(

Do all X-700's have 24-5/8" scale lengths?

I would have expected 25.5" but if Gryphon says 24&5/8" it could be I guess. I always thought they were like the Artist Award only with mounted pickups and controls.

Johnny Smith preferred 25" but I'm not sure whether he got it with the various makers of his signature guitar. He was pretty picky though.

I thought they were 24 1/2 but it's an easy mis-measure.
AS a matter of fact I happen to have the '96 catalog here and it says an X-700 has the usual 25-5/8 scale and a 1-11/16 nut.
In fairness Hans has pointed out even the catalogs were subject to error.

Hey, what are friends for?
Another possibility I thought of was that the bridge might actually be mis-located, but I think DTW would have noticed the accompanying intonation prob if that was the case.

This scale length question always intrigued me. My '94 (S/N 16) sits at 24 7/8" Lo-E, 24 3/4" Hi-E. I'd call it 24.75/Gibson scale, same as the other electric Guilds of the era. I do remember the later 90s catalog calling for 25.5/Fender scale and wondering if they'd changed it or if it was just a misprint. We're still talking pre-Benedetto here; I have no idea about those ones.

I would love to know what scale other owners' X-700s actually are.
