Well If I were you I'd stretch the budget a bit and contact West R Lee who has a nice D55 for sale for around the $1050 mark.... By my figuring a D55 is a holy grail guitar, you'll never want for more ( Ok you might want for others, but not instead of...)

Yeah, after looking at the D-55 on the internet, I am sold on it 100%. I can kick the budget up some so I am in the right range. What the heck, we don't need the new kitchen stove that bad, the wife is learning to cook real well over a campfire. Moreover, with the guitar being an acoustic, I won't have to get the electric turned back on either, because the days are getting longer now anyways.

Merry Christmas all,

Hey Donboy,

I am guessing you are pretty open to any Guild dread, which is good. But before settling on one specific model, I would test drive both mahogany and rosewood (and maple) dreads before making your final decision. The D55 is a beauty, but if the D50 has your preferred tone, then you will ultimately be unsatisfied with the D55. Beauty is in the eyes and ears of the beholder, so I suggest trying several models before laying down that cold hard cash.

Donboy,
I'll echo what Ian said and add that I've had that very same guitar in my hands and would recommend it highly. It sounds good and feels good, so what more could you ask?

If my budget would allow......

Thanks again for your input everyone.

I don't have the benefit of being in a large urban area, where I can look over a lot of guitars. There is one Guild dealer in this town and he has new ones on hand and not many used ones ever. I am going to go back in there and play around on the Dreadnaught's he has, and go from there. I also have a pretty good amount of high frequency gone from my hearing, too much rock & roll and gunfire in the early 70s, so that I can't tell if some tones are even there, so as long as I can hear the tones of chords without it being muddy, I'm in good shape. The hearing loss is another great reason to get a Guild, I can tell the difference between the Guilds and the other high test brands he has in his store, Dean, Taylor etc., and the Guild's always have more to offer in sound and loudness.

While I agree with the idea in principle -- play as many guitars as you can before making a purchase -- I'd be interested in hearing from any D55 owners who would describe themselves as "unsatisfied."

As I previously stated, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Perspective in beauty changes with each individual. A better question to ask is how many people tried a D55 and opted for a different guitar. Personally I have no interest in a D55 no matter how many I try. Not that they are not nice, but my interests lie elsewhere. The people who own the D55 are the people who like the D55 and the OP may very well be one of those. I have read on a few occasions about individuals purchasing a D55 and eventually trading for a D50. I am just advising the OP to be sure before spending $1K.

I've owned 2 D55's and have played many, that's the '01 Westerly in the avatar. I'm more than satisfied with the D55.

Couldn't be happier with my '06 D-55 I bought new. I've played hundreds of gigs with it since new and it always puts a smile on my face!

Within the original budget, I'd look for a nice 70's D-40.
