A new book gives an in depth retelling and expansion of the troubling and tragic story of Jim Gordon, the brilliant schizophrenic drummer.

He died in prison last March.

Obituary:

The horrific nature of his savage crime, the extremely violent and brutal murder of his mother, seems to have derailed normal legal procedures for diminished responsibility which would have landed him in more compassionate care in a psychiatric hospital rather than a prison.

The horrific nature of his crime also seems to have led to his cancellation--damnatio memoriae.

Book Review/Promo:

Sobering Take Away:
Rare as Gordon’s particular case was, one key reason Selvin [the author] said he wrote his book was to let readers know how common various forms of schizophrenia are. “To me, the single most astonishing fact of the research I did was that schizophrenia affects one in 100 people,” he said. “Let that sink in: Multiple sclerosis affects one in 10,000! We see these people out in the street, hearing voices all the time. Their world is totally frightening. And I have nothing but compassion for them. Unfortunately, society doesn’t.”

Sad story in so many ways. :(

I had never heard of him before Tom Bukovac mentioned him in a youtube vid as the most famous endorser of Camco drums. I read his wiki page afterwards and learned a little more. Apparently, he was a protege of Hal Blaine. Such a tragedy for someone with so much talent. I'll have to check out the book. Thanks for the heads up!
