If it were a crack in the wood, it wouldn't cross grain lines so easily.
I agree 100%
Looks to me like a check in the lacquer.

Here's a simple test. Take a cloth and rub the area hard and long enough to heat it up slightly. If it's a lacquer check it will likely close up and be almost invisible. Then it will open again as it cools.

I'd like to see a picture of the "crack".

I'd just like to see a picture of a $9000 Guild.
Dave

Scroll down 'till you see the link "at Gbase!" (next to the Gibby headstock). Click on that and put "Guild" in the "Make" box under "Search inventory". It's the only one they have.
Although they ARE listed as an authorized dealer on the new website. :?
But they'll order a new one for you!
In case you don't want that D55.
It only lives about 5 blocks away from me in a special display case.
But I don't go to visit it because I know I'll leave feeling just a little bit inadequate somehow...
I go a couple of miles down the road to the vintage Ferrari dealer and try to get them to give me a test drive in the $300,000.00 F55 instead. It helps, a little.

Thanks... now I can also feel inadequate.

Did I read elsewhere that they've got this jacked up high because they don't want to sell it?

Dave :D

Yes. It has in fact been there since new. It keeps going up. I must be honest and say that that is my educated conclusion, or it would have been sold by now. My first speculation was that it serves them better as a "drawing" piece which will result in sales of more "price friendly" instruments, but the other day it also occurred to me that there may well be an insurance issue too. They've got a monstrous "Collectible room" and you KNOW it's gotta be insured. Maybe they need to be able to justify its insured value with an actual price tag? I'm sure that's more than it's insured for but maybe that also actually helps set the retail value of it as a collectible. Maybe I'll get around to asking 'em. Seems like a harmless question. After all it wouldn't be like I wanted 'em to take it out of the case and actually PLAY it or anything...
It's already been reviewed by our member Yettoblaster anyway:
