Daughter found a Guild in the local ads and called for photos and details. Guy said it was a D100 and wanted $600. Sent her these cell phone pics:

Daughter is related to me so skepticisim is coded in her genes. What is this? Is it even a Guild (other than the headstock)? Bad rehab? Smells like solid waste but I'm no expert. What say you?
Thanks!

Solid waste is too nice of a word for that p.o.s. It's probably not worth $60 let alone $600.

Your skepticism is well founded - these "D-100's" have been seen here before, owner swears "it's a Guild, at least that's what I've been told, that's what the sticker says, yada yada"

Hey Tarhead, welcome to LTG.

Does it have the carved heel?

D-100 for $600 huh? That's darned close to a bargoon to be sure.

"It says Guild on the headstock and there is a label glued inside that says Guild, therefore it must be a Guild.

Tar, destroy the photos immediately and don't look back!

Not even close to a D100, let alone a Guild. It's trash.

Thanks guys!
What do I know? I'm a Taylor fanboy and Daughter is on this quest for a $600 D100! It's in Lafayette, LA if anyone wants to mess with this guy.

If anyone in south Louisana/NE TX or the Raleigh-Charlotte-Greenville area has a decent sub $1500 guitar for sale she's shopping. Prefers older Gibsons/Guilds/Martins with character over bling. She plays rhythm for a couple of traditional Cajun dance bands. PM me if you know of anything.
Thanks again!

Sounds like the force is strong among you two. You might consider becoming Guild Mounties. ;)

Might want to consider a D-50 or D-55 then. You can definitely get one for less than $1500 in both cases.

How weird that these keep showing up and that they're all different! We've seen a couple now of the "really bad" type with the big white square label and generic font Guild decal and now a couple of the "pretty bad" variant with the correct-looking oval label and odd squished together g-shield decal. Somebody should collect these.

What a bizarre thing to fake anyway.

Anybody else think this particular "specimen" looks kind of like a sanded-on epiphone?

Edit: anyway, you can get all sorts of good and really fancy older and newer Guild acoustics in either D or J shapes for <$1,500. And you can also easily get a not so fancy used American Guild that will still be a great playing and sounding guitar for around the $600 being asked on the fake.

Welcome to LTG. We'll be glad to watch, or help, as you (or your daughter) search for a real Guild.

As for Taylors, weren't all the men in the Viva Viagra commercial playing Taylors? Just sayin'. 8)

Welcome to LTG!

If your daughter wants character over bling in a dreadnaught, a good 70s-80s D-25 (arched mahogany-backed cannons with tons of character!) can often be found for $500-750, D-35s or D-40s (flat-backed mahogany) for a little more or less (35s, a little less; 40s a little more), or a similar era D-50 (rosewood) for <$1500. Which fits her musical needs better would be a matter of personal preference. Good hunting!

Oh yeah, welcome!

We're only Guild-biased around here because they were the best guitars made, and at bargain prices :D

Not that there aren't Taylors that I'd love to add to my stable...and what's not to like about American made in this economy? :D

I would have your daughter consider gardman's advice. For instance, she could snag a real nice D-25 for a good price, and it will stand right in there with the band. Candidly, the price/value ratio is a major reason we like our Guilds.

I e-mailed him, got some pics back and then replied that he had a fake if he did not already know it and provided the Westerly Guild Guitars D-100 link.
This is what he sent me back

The picture you showed me is of a d-100 from around 1999. The d-100 I have is when the d-100 was first issued in the late 70's. It is def. Not a fake it was my grandfathers.

Welcome Tarhead, kick your shoes off, relax your mind.

As mentioned, there are a lot of options in your daughter's price range and playing needs with Guilds. Feel free to post any other guitars you find, we love to look at pictures and help others feed their GAS when we aren't feeding our own. (I'm currently GASed out...) Also keep an eye on FS/FT and ebay/craigslist/gbase offerings here on this board. If you find something that looks interesting but isn't near you chances are there's an LTG member near willing to check it out for you. Happy Hunting, jm
