Re: "New" Westerly D-55 Arrived Safely - UPDATE ...

An Update ...

Took the D-55 to the luthier today. Took it apart and examined thoroughly. Scoped the insides and everthin'. All is perfection, with the following "cosmetic" issues. The fret wire used in re-fretting has a VERY high crown, and as a result a shim was placed under the (bone) bridge to get the "right" action. SO WRONG !!

The seller had also installed a wrong string - the "G" string was a D string. Really. Well no big deal in the grand scheme - just makes you shake your head and say hmmmmm ....

The frets are all being dressed down to "Martin" height (like a 50% reduction), shim gone, new strings, new ebony with abalone dot bridge pins being installed (same kind used in Collings) with matching end pin. Action should be just fine after that.

The luthier loved the guitar (rare in Canada), and said that if he had it in his shop he would easily put a $2K plus price tag on it. I pick it up again on Thursday (today is Tues), and expect that it will really sing.

P.S. Next to my Martin this thing is a TANK ! It feels heavier than the D-6. Mondo stick.

Congratulations on your D55 - it's a beautiful guitar and I'm sure you'll cherish it for years to come as I have mine. I purchased a D55 back in 1973 (a Westerly as you know) and will never part with her. I feel you can't beat the quality and sound and she has mellowed so well over the years. I played in a folk/rock band many years ago in NJ - played bass - but we all had Guilds. Back in 1999, I picked up a Martin D12-28...it's nice, but the D55 will always be my pride and joy.

The wife and I recently saw the Moody Blues here in Connecticut..Hayward plays a Guild 12 string, among other guitars...but that Guild stands out! I'm new to this forum, so wanted to introduce myself while compliment this nice find of a D55. :D

Welcome, Rich.

Might I suggest that you start a new thread to introduce yourself.
Not too many folks will see you here.

On the other hand, with this group of crazies, that may be a good thing.

As far as I know the D55 never had a tortoise guard until they started making them in New Hartford, CT.

Mine is from the same era (late 90's).
My '92 D-55 has a tortoise guard:

Not to thread hijack, but does anyone know if you can still get those black pickguards from anywhere?

When I bought my '06 D-55 I was disappointed to see it came with a tortoise pickguard. SO... I called the Customer Service Dept at Fender and asked if they could find me a black one to replace it. They said, "No problem!" Within days I received a blackpickguard that fit the spot perfectly and it was FREE OF CHARGE.

One well known local luthier/store refused to do the switch for me and said they'd have to charge $250 to even try. So, I took it to Gary Brawer in San Francisco. 10 minutes and $20 later I had my guitar back with the black pickguard on it. Perfect!

Give Fender a call.

I also replaced the faux tortise on mine with a black one.
The store where I bought the guitar order it for me from Guild Tacoma. Also no charge.

When I did the minor action adjustment required upon it's arrival, I also plugged in some new ebony bridge pins that have mop dots with a little gold circle around the dot. I think it matches up nicely with the black pickguard.
