What a beautiful guitar- congratulations, and I’m filled with admiration for the careful detailing you are doing! Wonderful to get the HB1’s!
It’s so difficult when something isn’t quite right, but the critical thing is that you have it! I bought a ‘66 SFIV some years ago (from a well-known overseas dealer) and when it arrived I was amazed to find that it was a ’special’ and completely hollow, and needed a neck reset.. Dealer denied knowledge, and customs had taken their bit already, but I Loved the sound, and the uniqueness, so I kept it. Still feel like a mug but forget that when I get it out! (I did reset the neck eventually)

What I’m not happy about is the condition. It was advertised as excellent and immaculate with minor wear to the metal. I already knew about the control knobs so no surprise there. It’s my own damn fault for acting too fast and not asking for good close-up pictures. I just didn’t want to lose the chance to seal the deal. The gold plating is 50% well worn off the pickups and a portion of the bridge.
Congratulations anyway! But at least GAD had already mentioned this in the original thread that the gold looks not so good anymore:

Thanks folks. It’s a good guitar, and after talking with Jeremy at Advanced Music Products I am confident that he can replate the major parts less tuners when I decide to do those for about $250.

As for tuners, I will pull and detail them when I remove the other parts. Though at some point I may put in some new Grover 18:1’s . I’ve reached out to Hans regarding vol and tone knobs if he has any. A correct toggle would be nice. Otherwise there are similar tele-like tuners on the market but they are not exactly the same. I may just keep the speed knobs on unless I can get true replacements.

Simply put, Guild Gold sux! One reason I have very few in gold.

Stupid question, what's "CU" stand for?

CU = Custom. It's one of the later Nightbird models from the era where they made ST (Standard), DX (Deluxe), and CU (Custom) with the "Custom" being the only one that resembled an actual Nightbird.

Interesting, Grot. Has that always been true? I wonder who does the plating for them? I would've assumed it'd be all over the map, but you know what happens when you assume... ;)

Not Grot (obviously), but gold plating on guitars usually sucks, but somehow in my experience it sucks more on Guilds and always has.

Weird. I wonder why that is. Did Westerly have its own plating facility? I'm pretty sure New Hartford did not, but I'm not sure. They didn't produce enough Guild electrics to have a rep one way or the other on this.

The thickness of electroplating can vary depending on whatever the desired end result is, so my guess is that Guild just plated thinner than most.
