So this arrived today. Thanks to someone spotting the Gbase ad and posting it on the Michael Messer Forum--
It's a 1928 Style 2 National single cone mandolin. 50 years ago I found a tricone Style 1 #144. This is #160, and after a handful
of the tricone versions they realized a single cone would be much more practical in such a small body. However, only the first few single
cones were made like this with the smaller screen coverplates to be able to use up the tricone bodies. These also have a smaller cone
than the later production versions. I also have #444 from 1930 which is how the majority of the silver and painted mandolins look.
This is nickel plated over German silver, and has the "wild rose" Style 2 engraving. Originally sold for $80. I need to take a group photo
of all three. And to get the tailpiece re-plated!
