My band, the Pieces of Mind, are playing their last ever gig on the 28th April 2024.

I started the band, along with some friends, way back in 1963. The band finished at the end of the 1960s.

In that period, we supported many well-known groups including: Billy Fury, Chicken Shack, Stu James & the Mojos, Georgie Fame & Blueflames, David Bowie, Gene Vincent, Johnny Kidd and the Pirates, Manfred Man, Marty Wilde, The Applejacks, The Hollies, The Merseybeats, The Moody Blues, The Nashville Teens, The Pretty Things, The Searchers and The Who. In 1967 the band were playing nightclubs such as the Star Club, Top Ten & Crazy Horse in Hamburg, as well as clubs in France.

The band reformed in 2013 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of forming in 1963.

For the last 10+ years, we have only done a handful of gigs each year, mainly because band members live quite far apart from each other. Since 2013, we have managed to record an album; appeared on national TV and also played a large festival.

However with all of us well in our 70s, we have finally decided to listen to our bodies and retire. We did try retiring in 2023, but wanted to give it one more go, especially as one of the early members didn't play last year.

We are playing a large pub in our hometown of Newport, in South Wales. We played there in 2023 and the place was heaving, so hopefully, it'll be the same in April. I sincerely doubt if any of you will make our last gig, but never mind, the thought is there.

The short video is something I knocked up yesterday and is an illustration of how powerful AI is these days.

Jeez, John... I wish I could be there for your last gig. I bet it'll be a blast.

There surely aren't many of us that can say they've created a band that stuck around for 60 years. Good golly!

Congrats and have fun.

I forgot to say that 5 out of the 6 in this 1964 publicity pic will be playing at the last gig. The 6th, bottom left, lives in Australia, so a bit far for him to come.

Of the other 3 in the band, 2 of them played in the late 60s. The final ‘newbie’ joined us when we reformed in 2013

John, which one is you?
Back left, when I had hair in 64.
Then the one named ‘Ducksy’.

BTW don’t believe what Rhod Gilbert said. I actually used to feed some ducks at lunchtimes, when in school. Some prat started calling me that & it’s stuck with me ever since. 😄
