Wish my fingers could that. Very impressed with that style of playing and what your sore finger pads sacrifice to make it all work.
Thanks very much Stu ( hope you don't mind me calling you that). That's a very nice compliment. I really must get around to recording some more of my compositions. When I was teaching music at school a few pupils said something along the lines of "you're just a showoff"which I found a bit strange. However, I probably overthink things, instead of just doing it.
All the best....Jerry

I'm certainly no doctor, but have you been evaluated for peripheral neuropathy?
Thanks for your interest. The most common cause of peripheral neuropathy in the UK is nerve damage from diabetes. It can also be caused by things like an injury or infection. (Sorry, I don't mean to be a smart-arse). I'm certainly no doctor also, but having worked at an NHS hospital for about 10 years I'm pretty sure the only way I could be evaluated for peripheral neuropathy would be to go private and as I'm on a meager pension it's out of the question. My father always advised me to get a job with a decent pension. I, of course being a long-haired hippy, thought "Yeah Dad, what do you know? Oh well!!
Thanks again...Jerry

I used to listen to John Fahey for hours and I think I had most of his albums. Before he died he claimed that most of his earlier stuff was rubbish and that his album "Hitomi" was indicative of the style he wanted to pursue. I've tried to get into "Hitomi" but I'm afraid I'm not a fan. I love his earlier music though. Born in the Balkans? Sounds like a Bruce Springsteen song....Oh yeah, wrong area.
Cheers...Jerry
I saw him years ago when he was still playing the good stuff. What a player!!

Occasionally I have experienced the type of pain you described, but probably in a less intense form. Yes, it is deeper in the finger pad for me, too. I can't find a reason for it. Fortunately for me, it goes away for very long periods of time. When the pain is there, I limit my playing time, but I do not stop playing. I play with a lighter touch at such times.

I wonder whether it is possible, despite your long experience, that you have started to unconsciously grip the strings with too much force? I do know that has been some of the problem for me.

More generally, I have become a big fan of low tension strings. Two brands that I return to again and again are Newtone Heritage (from the UK, order on their website by searching Newtone guitar strings), and GHS Thincore strings. There is simply less suffering in playing these strings. I realize that your attempts to tune down or use lighter gauge strings may be yielding the same effect (which apparently does not work for you). On the other hand, a few bucks for a set of strings might be worth the experiment.

Best wishes to you in working this out. When you love playing, as you clearly do, there is much at stake.

Thanks so much for your very comprehensive reply. I was a music teacher for 15 years at a number of different schools and I often found the children were pressing the strings as hard as possible to get a clear tone. I tried to impress upon them the need to press positively but in a gentler way. Your assertion that I might be unconsciously gripping too hard is a valid one, but I don't think I do. However I will keep an eye on that!

I have recently bought a set of Newtone strings and I will put these on at my next string change. I'll let you know how I get on with them.

I really appreciate your reply. It's really weird, but since my post (for which I've received quite a few very nice replies) my finger pain has reduced. Coincidence or what?
All the best with your finger pains too.

Take care....Jerry
