Today I was at a pawn shop and saw a Guild D-100. It needs some work.

I would like to know more about it but in my effort to decode its serial number I hit a wall.

Now I am wondering if it is not a US model.

It needs the bridge removed and glued back in place. The top has a pronounced bulge behind the bridge so it could need a new bridge plate. The truss rod would need to be checked out because the neck relief is over an 1/8 inch.

So it is sad but fixable.

What year is it? Is it a fake? Should I take on another fixer upper?

Thank you,

Radioteacher

For comparison, here is a link to an actual D100, which is a premium model.

Definitely fake. A label without handwriting is an immediate giveaway. The headstock shape is the second.

See https://letstalkguild.com/ltg/index.php?threads/sellers-of-counterfeit-guilds.169766/ for some links to discussion of known counterfeits. The pics in the other threads don't show up well but if you are looking in a pawn shop in Texas I'd say the odds are in favor that the instrument you are looking at has the same source.

Pickguard, bridge, fingerboard markers, no purfling, everything shows it's not an actual Guild not to mention what has already been pointed out...
Stay away from that guitar !

Did you play it at all? How does it sound? And, what kind of wood is the back made from? Certainly not rosewood.

But, hey, for $13 it would be cheap enough to give to a young kid to bang on…..

Thank you all! I did pass on the guitar. It did not pass the smell test at the store and I did not need a one more project guitar.

For me, I could not figure out the serial number and the pickguard shape was wrong. I started looking at labels and I could not find anything close to that design in a search.

I own a number of guitars but sadly not any Guild's. I will stay on the look out for them in the future.

Thanks again for for assistance,

Perhaps the laziest fake I have ever seen!
In 2018 I saw a fake "Gibson" mandolin at a Pawn shop for $1300. It was awful. They used a Rogue that was about $250 new.

When I confronted the manager, he did not care. No integrity at all and totally shameless. I just shook my head and never returned to that shop while he managed it.

The headstock label was off center, under the pickguard was a block of wood with two Philips screws in it (that made me laugh out loud in the store), the tuners were just awful, it looked un-played but the serial number on the inside label indicated that it was 30 years old.

For pawn shops I do not trust and always validate.

Be careful out there,

I don't think any mandolin player (certainly any willing to pay $1300) would mistake that for a real Gibson!
