Great article Bill, but I have to differ about it being best at flatpicking. My old D50 was and is the one of the best fingerstyle guitars I've ever played, 1 11/16" nut and all. As a bonus, it sounds way better now that it has break angle back after the neck reset. I'm SO happy to have this guitar back!

As far as these New D50s go, I'd rather have the Standard for its Sitka top, lower price, and simple beauty. That NH D40 I owned really turned me off to Adi tops, and that surprised me really. All I had ever heard up to that point was how wonderful Adi was.

Hi Sandy....I think if the Adi were as old and as played in as your old D50 you might be singin' a different tune... that said I sold my Adi top 2009 Adi D50 and can't wait to get my (new) 79 D50 back from Nicole, the luthier who is fixing the shoddy 'finish work someone did after repairing 3 cracks in the top...I loved its sound so much....the Adi which I was getting to like a lot...just didn't compare...to me..for me...Steffan

Me either Steffan. Give me a nicely aged, Sitka topped Westerly any day. Those Adi tops seem to take a long time to come around, although I guess when they do they're fine. My '73 is one of the old style bracing D50s (wish I could find that thread), and it's a real tank, too. 8)

It is interesting that Taylor charges a $200 premium for an Adirondack Spruce top, where with a Guild...and I think Collings and Huss & Dalton you get them "for nothing"...that is it is just standard for them. Clearly the Guild Standard series must use Sitka as a lower cost wood, but I would agree I am more partial to it.

I was a little disappointed that they said it wasn't as good for finger picking...what I would really like to try/hear is one of the F30 cutaways with a Rosewood back
