Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum so thanks for adding me.

I have recently purchased a Guild M-40 but lately I have noticed some cracks on the varnish.. Mostly on th bottom of the top, around the bridge and all around the biding.

It seems also that the table is slightly domed. And this i confirmed by the fact that my strings are higher than before.

It's really strange as the guitar as always been stored inside the original case with the humidifier kept moist. And there are no brutal change in temperature in the room where the guitar is stored..

I'm afraid the guitar has suffered irreparable damages. It was a guitar I've bought to travel with and now I'm afraid if I continue to play it the situation is going to get worse.

Any advice ? Have you ever seen such thing ?

Thanks a lot 🙏

That's pretty severe "crazing" of the finish, Popopolo. Perhaps you opened the guitar case in a cold room, or let the guitar sit in the cold and opened it up in a warm room? Or, perhaps it's impact damage from something you did?

Anyway, I certainly wouldn't worry about it getting worse. And, in any case, it's purely cosmetic. Good luck with it.

If a guitar that has unknown structural issues, I suggest you have it looked at soon by a pro, in case you have something dire to report to your seller.

Yes, if you bought it new from an authorized Guild dealer, it's covered under warranty. The fact that the action is higher makes it more than purely "cosmetic". As Dave said, I'd take the strings off and look for loose or defective bracing. Did you buy it new??

Welcome to LTG!

My 2016 M40 arrived with some finish checking from its previous owner, but it has never bothered me.

As for being afraid to travel with it, I wouldn't worry. I would, however, get the guitar checked out by a qualified luthier, even a Guild authorized one if you are the original owner. Seasonal changes to the action are normal, especially in light builds like the M40, and are easy to address. If there is a structural problem that is a result of workmanship, it should be covered under warranty. If not, it shouldn't be too expensive, and definitely worth doing.

If you give us your location, we should be able to help with finding aa repair place.

Hey everyone, thanks for the answer provided here.

The guitar has been bought second-hand. But I have inspected it very carefully and at the time of purchase in February it shows no signs of damages.

I’m located in Paris. I think I need to find myself a good luthier to have it inspected.

What concerns me the most are the cracks around the bridge.. gaves me the impression that it could coming unstuck

I would definitely take it to a qualified luthier then. I can't help you with one in Paris, but it's a big city, and should have plenty. And I wouldn't borrow any trouble until you do. It might be something minor, and easily addressable.
