Hi all, new to the forum but wanted to share my story of how I acquired my new lifelong partner... a 1963 Guild Duane Eddy 400. Hoping documenting my journey can help someone down the line, as I struggled to find all the answers in one place!

I've always loved DynaSonics and hollowbodies, but never actually owned this combination until recently. Scrolling through ebay listings, I saw a DeArmond T-400 and was blown away by how beautiful it looked! Several deep dives through this forum convinced me it was a good idea to buy it, even though it had 2ks instead of proper DynaSonics... When it arrived, I fell in love the design, fully hollow and slightly wider than most hollowbodies. I bought it primarily to play Chet (poorly) on, but quickly fell in love with Duane Eddy's music after investigating the progenitor of this design. I kept going back to the T-400 and then started digging for an original...

Through a number of coincidences, I ended up with a cherry red DE-400 from 1963. Mahogany body, open book headstock, and REAL DynaSonics! The guitar was in ridiculously good shape, with one owner who bought it new back in the day. Apparently it was repsrayed at some point, maybe a new clearcoat? But it felt and sounded great so could not pass it up. The mahogany helps to tame the DynaSonics (or maybe it is all in my head). But regardless, this is my new favorite combination!

However, there was some problems that are typical of older Guilds... The plastic veneer on the headstock is slightly lifting, which I can live with for now. But the finish was starting to chip and lift on the treble side of the neck. Luckily, no paint was lost... but one wrong move could have been a disaster! After talking to my old guitar tech, I felt comfortable applying some fresh nitrocellulose lacquer from Northwest Guitars (UK). I used a natural fiber (hog hair) brush to apply several coats on flaky part of the neck. Waited a week or so to wet sand it down to match the original finish, going from 800 to 1200 to 2000 grit using neoprene foam and leather sanding blocks. I finished it off with hand rubbing some 3M Finesse It to bring everything to a gloss and... it was perfect! The cracking, chipped finish melted back into place and I've never had a nicer feeling neck, it looks fresh from the factory. So after being afraid to play the guitar for months... I now cannot put it down!

Anyways, thanks to everyone on the forum for documenting all these issues and solutions! I would not have been able to resurrect my Guild without your help.

Spectacular twin set, congratulations and welcome to the club!

I own a blond T-400 myself - which I love - and hope someday to be able to add a DE400/500 to my collection.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome!!! Much appreciated.

Spectacular twin set, congratulations and welcome to the club!

The T-400 is incredible. I'm amazed how close the T-400 is to the original. Obviously there are differences, but the build between the two seem really similar. I'm really surprised Fender went that far to create an accurate replica! I still find myself going back to the T-400 even though I have the Guild . The maple and DeArmond 2ks make enough of a difference in the sound. But if I somehow played a DE-400 that wasn't for sale, I don't think I would have been motivated enough to seek one out to replace the T-400! I'm genuinely impressed how close they got to the originals.

I'll probably post some comparisons between the two at some point! I'm quite jealous of your stair step pickguard, I don't know when they switched to/from the rounded ones for the DeArmond T-400. But in the end, I'm glad mine matches the DE-400. I've also read that there are some differences in the neck of the T-400s? My headstock just has a rounded top, not the traditional Guild headstock. There is really no mention of Guild ANYWHERE on mine... My T-400 also has a chunky neck, while the DE-400 is actually quite slim in comparison! I've read that T-400s with the Guild truss cover and traditional Guild headstock have a thinner neck? So probably closer to my DE-400.

Don't get too jealous, DSTH - Pickguardian apparently still offers the stairstep PG for the T-400.

Yours should be a later (after FMIC purchase of Guild) one I believe - those don't have the three humps headstock. Mine has a full neck - which I like - but I wouldn't define it as "chunky".

Truly a very nice instrument for the money, and I'm only sorry I did not buy one (or three!) when they were four/five hundred dollars.

Incidentally, I also own a Tennessee orange "three humps" T-400 (sans pickguard unfortunately) that I'd rather sell to one of us LTGers. Please PM me if interested.

Oh! So FMIC bought Guild after they started producing DeArmond guitars in Korea? I guess that makes sense... they stripped them of their branding and then threw the Squier name on them shortly after.

Well maybe I should grab an earlier T-400, just to compare... and maybe another DE-400... for science!

Yes, I'm regretting not grabbing any of these on clearance! I remember them being around for next to nothing... But anyways, best of luck on the sale! To any LTGer out there, you will not regret it. Amazing instruments!

No, the whole DeArmond guitar line was a Fender thing from day one.
Guild as well as the DeArmond brand were owned by FMIC at the time.

Thanks for setting the record straight, WB.

Do you (or anyone else) then know why they switched from the orthodox headstock shape to the later one?

They also changed the TRC and Tuners when they replaced the 3-bump headstock with a single middle bump design.

no, I have no idea. No offense to anyone who likes them, but I found the whole DeArmond line dissappointing. They looked cute and kind of like Guilds, but played and sounded nothing like them.

I owned a DeArmond X135 for a couple of years, Put two old Franz pickups and a Bigsby on it for flying gigs so I didn't have to risk flying with my old Guilds.
But that guitar too...It was all tubby bass and harsh treble and none of the glorious midrange I look for in a laminated archtop, and I had to adjust the truss rod more than on any other guitar I ever had.

I have a NS X175 for the same purpose now, and it's a much better instrument IMO - not perfect, but plugged into my go-to rig it's a lot more like my Guilds.

I think what happened to the DeArmond name is kind of sad. The company was a pioneer in guitar pickups. They're unique and not copies or cousins of any other pickups, even the pickups that were on Harmony and Harmony made Silvertones were the best thing about those guitars...now they're a discontinued budget guitar brand and chintzy pickups made to a low price point that look like the real thing but are sorely lacking in comparison.

Taste is a subjective matter so I'm not offended in the least way. I didn't care much for the (three) DeArmond Starfires I have owned but I'm in love with the T-400.

I like your music though!

The new/old band sounds great!

On the original topic, I wonder if I'm the only one who occasionally eyes mid-'60s DEs with humbuckers and imagines swapping them for DeArmonds....

Thanks Harp Tail - I quit that band, and after 12 years of hiatus, my old band is back together and we're having a lot of fun. This is from about two weeks ago, with my trusty '62 X175

I would say "lekker" - even better than WB & the Mercenaries.

those dearmond 2000s are great pickups !! congratulations !!
it might be an interesting experiment to put the 2000s in the T-400 and see how it sounds.
