I read that musician and producer Steve Abini died last night. During the era that formed my musical aesthetics, Steve Albini was a standout and iconic figure.
For those who don't know about him, he was prominent in the Midwest music scene in Chicago playing drums in bands Big Black and Shellac. He's probably most known for producing Nirvana, the Pixies, PJ Harvey, The Breeders, Slint, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and a ton of other bands. I feel he was the embodiment of the post-punk DIY approach and alternative music attitude of the 80s and 90s, typified by making records and music on your own terms and releasing through independent labels. So sad that he passed so young.
