The Rogue Folk Club's upcoming concert schedule landed in my inbox this morning.

The concerts are generally held in a lovely, intimate little hall with great acoustics, a small deconsecrated church, St. James, now the Mel Lehan Hall at St. James. It is located in the Kitsalano neighbourhood on the west side of Vancouver, BC.

The events have a homey grassroots feel to them, as it is all volunteer run by music lovers. The audiences also tend to contain singers and musicians--I remember one event when a singer on stage invited anyone who could sing harmony to do so--a number of people with gorgeous voices stood up and in a nanosecond had perfect 3 part harmony worked out.. The acts often mingle with the audience at break and after the shows.

For many of the concerts, there is a streaming, Watch at Home, option. Tickets are generally $15 CDN, about $11.13 US, 8.82 GBP, or 10.34 EUR

The quality of the filming and sound in the past has been good enough that some arists, such as Martyn Joseph, have taken the video stream recordings and burned them to DVDs for merch table sales at other venues.

A few of the guitar-related highlights for me are:

Harry Manx

Martyn Joseph

Teddy Thompson

Steve Dawson (no live stream)

Great lineup! I'm jealous.

No need for jealousy ... well ... at least not if you don't mind a late night and a bleary next morning. ;)

As you undoubtedly know, Vancouver is in the Pacific Standard Time zone, UTC Offset: UTC -8. You are only three hours ahead of Vancouver.

The streaming option is doable. The streaming ticket prices are cheap.

The Rogue is a perpetually struggling, non-profit, labour-of-love organisation (as most non-profits are). There must be some financial or contractual reason that they do not open a time window to allow asynchronous viewing for people in other time zones. Maybe there is insufficient demand. Their promotional reach does not extend much further than Greater Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.

A music starved friend in northern rural Texas often drops in the streamed concerts.

Steve Edge, the principal behind the Rogue (pictured below in the St. James hall), goes to a lot of Canadian and US folk music events, small and large, He is usually scouting new talent.

If you have an act and have an interest in touring the Pacific Northwest, it might be worth your while to do a bit of schmoozing. You might get a gig. You will likely get good advice and list of useful contacts. He has been doing this forever and seems to know everyone.

I can understand that small organizations are unable to provide on-demand viewing.

There are similar groups here. One popular open stage that I used to attend is now completely online, with participants from a surprising number of locations. I joined for one session, but I missed the real-life contact and interaction among the audience & performers.
