The general line of thinking is that birds evolved from some form of reptile, but there's still debate over which form of reptile and when the transition took place.
You can follow any number of graphs showing links from the Paleozoic and through the Mesozoic and see links that eventually lead modern birds back to dinosaurs.

Of course, it took a little time to get here from there! :wink:
