Local CL has a cherry red SF4, late 90's for less than $1000. What's a fair market price of these today?
Thanks,
Terry

It seems like the later SF4s don't really have the value of the earlier ones. I saw that one on CL for $800 IIRC, and that's a heck of a buy at that price. Usually the later westerly SF4s go for at least $1000, and usually more. Thinking of pulling the trigger?

Hi Sandy,
Thanks for getting back quickly. I've asked the guy for more pics, which I hope are better than his phone pictures. If it is as clean as he says, I'd be interested. It's local.
On the hollow body front I've only got an X-175 and the T50 I picked up in Arlington last year. Could be fun. A quick search here didn't give me any reviews, so to speak. If anyone has one, let me know what you think.
Thanks,
Terry

Well, there's a few of them here on the board. Default's got my old '97 SF4 blondie, and he's pretty fond of it from what I can gather. The later Westerlys have a 1 11/16" nut, and most of the earlier ones have a 1 5/8" nut, though I'm not sure when the change occurred.

For that kind of money you can't go too far wrong, and the guitar looked minty even in those crappy pics IIRC.

If there's nothing structurally wrong with it, that's a great value for under $1k. I don't know market value - but you're getting your money's worth.

Market value seems to be $800-1200 depending on how many of them are available on ebay at the time of sale. :)

It really depends on how late '90s we're talking too. The year will dictate (more or less) the pickups. If they're Fender pickups, like in my '99 and '00, then they're not worth as much as say, a '97 with SD1s, or better yet, a '94 with HB1s.

$800.00 - Wow!

I always think them "Wow" at $1200.00.

Edit - coherency

I've been in touch with the seller. He's going to be unavailable for a few days. So updates when they happen.

Done Deal! Great condition, with some case candy. Pictures to come. Can someone give me some suggestions for strings?

Congratulations Terry! That's a great price on a real pretty guitar. I used 11-49 D'Addarios on my '97, but that might be a little too heavy for you.

I also use D'Addario's Jazz/Rock set, XL-115 that are 11-49 on my Starfire-4 (2001, one of the very last Westerly ones). I like 'em on the shorter scale (24.75") of the Starfire because they feel about the same as 10's do on the Strat with its longer scale (25.50").

Thanks for the string advice. Next question, how can I tell what kind of Pickups are on it? I'm an acoustic guy and have never understood which are which. This has black finished Pups on it. Serial makes it around 97-98.

I'm not good at the whole late 90s-present pickup timeline thing, either. On the other hand, if the pickups in yours are black, then I'm pretty sure they're aftermarket replacements. Sounds like you'll just have to wait til you have instrument in hand to pull them and find out.

Here's a picture of the sellers. In researching this, I've found some other ones out there from the mid to late 90's with this look. And the answer is :?:

Send the serial number to Hans - He'll tell you what pickups were in it originally.

If they're stock, I'd guess XR-7 or Dimarzios, but if it's a late 90s, I'd say there's a chance that they're not stock. It's got the wide screws of the HB1/SD1s... Every HB1 I've seen with the cover off had ugly almost creme bobbins. Maybe they could be SD1s with the covers off?

Sorry - no definitive answer from me on this one.
