Anyone using anything different than lights (12-54) on their D40? I have always used mediums on my dreads but looks like this was built for lights per Guild. It is time for new strings and wondered what you guys like.

Thanks
Scott

I put mediums on my Traditional for awhile. Thickened up the tone, raised the action a hair but didn’t notice any ill effects such as bellying. I’ve since gone back to lights. I think they can handle mediums just fine.

Try anything you like, Scott! My advice is to find a (light) string that you like by trying lots of different string types/brands at the same gauge and then trying different gauges of the same type/brand after you find the sound you like.

There are no rules, but if you end up going heavy gauge, maybe tune down 1/2-step.

I switch between Martin Retros and Martin Flex Core PB (Tommy’s Choice) on my D40 Standard. They both sound great, just a little different.

Thanks rb! I did just put some of these Martin coated strings on the D40 and I really like them. I have never been much on coated but these don't feel or sound like some of the coated strings I have used in the past. I am going to try some Martin Retros next time. PXL_20240408_163527229.MP.jpg

I currently have a set of Ernie Ball Aluminum Bronze lights on my Traditional. Very nice tone once the brashness wears off. I have a set of Retros coming to try out when these die.
I've used the Lifespan in the past and liked them. The packaging says "treated", not "coated" so they may not actually be coated. Not sure what the "treatment" is.
