Re: T1RVT - STARTING TO GET P****D OFF NOW!

I just stumbled onto this post. Is help still needed? I have a pair of these in the basement and owned a half dozen over the years.

Traditionally the 8 inch speaker was intentionally wired out of phase on these amps as a noise & feedback supression technique.

I certaintly would be worried about the impact of shorting the output transformer for potential damage. If the amp was just serviced it may not have been ran long enough to damage the transformer.

If I remember correctly there is a trick to selecting the polarity tap off of the main speaker. If you pick the wrong side you effectivly short out the signal into the reverb can and won't get any sound. However you will hear the ambient reverb pan noise but no music. Do you hear any reverb?

Also, I had these amps look like they were wired correctly but if you look carefully their may be a break in the wire on the HFP/Attenuator circuit that is on the input to the reverb pan. Additionally on some of these amps Guild did not use a RCA connector into or out of the reverb pan. Instead they ran a hard wire through the reverb pan RCA(F) connector hole and soldered it directly to the input or output. I had at least one of these with a wire break so carefully remove the reverb pan and make sure all the in and out wires are connected.

Re: T1RVT - STARTING TO GET P****D OFF NOW!

M - I'll look at all these tips - thanks. No, there's no reverb sound or noise at all. Tell me more about "selecting the polarity tap off of the main speaker"? I have only an extensive base of ignorance to work with.

Capnjuan has guided me well. I saw that the speaker wouldn't work wired that way. He helped me see also that the speaker and transformer have both shorted out, and a capacitor may be gone as well. He has told me where to find replacement parts.

This is real electricity, like automotive wiring - I think, with this board's excellent help and generous friendship, that I can be taught to deal with it.

I thought I'd swap in the 8" speaker from my Thunderbird (a bad idea, I know now, without checking the power amp first). But it doesn't work either - one lead had broken off and dangling on the speaker cone. That's great news - I thought the amp itself was broken, and needed expert help to trouble-shoot and repair. But I just need to swap in the Thunderbird speaker assembly I have from yet another cattywumpus amp that was smashed in shipping.

I had assumed it was electronic, and I couldn't do anything. Now I see it's electricity and mechanics, and with help I can deal with it. I'm taking pictures, and I'll post a bunch when I'm done, for the edification of other ignorant ones like me.

This forum shares real knowledge effectively, and contributes to good friendship. Pretty nifty, feels to me.

Don, if you're watching, thanks again.

Feeling a little silly now, having gone into mild despair over what turns out to be nothing much.

I took Capnjuan's advice and plugged in another speaker for the reverb on the T1RVT - works like a charm. Just for fun, I plugged the same speaker into my Thunderbird which I believed to be badly broken, and it works too. So what I thought in my ignorance were two major jobs turn out to be quite a lot simpler - find and install 2 8" speakers, similar vintage CTS or better. This even I can do.

Recommendations for replacements?

Thanks again to all for help. What a generous crew.

Hi John; I just gave you yardage, elevation, and wind direction ... you pulled the club. Problems have to simple to lend themselves to fixing via post/reply or email and the condition of the old speaker put the health of the OT, the 6BM8, and the reverb amp's multi-section can cap and power supply in question. Sometimes taking chances works ... other times ... not so good ... but is was the cowboy move here and one I would have taken too.

Considering that the 8" speaker is sound reinforcement in reverb/off mode, then its contribution to the amp's presence is greater than it might be if it only functioned for reverb only ... despite the fact that the T1RVT's schematic is in error on this point  Coastie's T1RVT has a Celestion G8L/35W that was bought used for reasonable money and I thought was good for the amp.

Yippie!! :D :D John
