This. I had no idea he stopped playing out after 2013. He was like 62 when he retired, which is an age many people do, across various professions.

Rice died at his home in Reidsville, North Carolina, on December 25, 2020, at age 69. He died while making his coffee, according to a statement from longtime friend and collaborator Ricky Skaggs.

Rice’s 2013 induction into the International Bluegrass Hall of Fame reportedly was the last time he played guitar in public due to the lateral epicondylitis that affected his ability to play in his last years.

So he's in Drop D??
I can never tell if dropped D is just the big E to a D, or is it E to D, G to F#, B to A, little E to D as well...
I have the big E to D all the time. The BR is pretty much perpetually this way.

Yeah, I did Then You in drop D on my JF30-12. Man, I've got to record the lyrics to go in there! Never been a vocalist. I'm sayin' the hell with that!

This latter one is what is currently named Open D

He tunes just the E down to a D...

and those are Martin Monel medium gauge strings on his infamous D-28.

Don't know about the strings (you may very well be right), but the guitar must be a Santa Cruz I believe...It has white binding along the fretboard it seems, unlike his 'infamous D-28'. They made a Signature model for him I kind of remember
