Non-forum person: buys Boatswain’s pipe, finds out it doesn’t work, buys another one that does work, uses it.
Forum person: buys Boatswain’s pipe, finds out it doesn’t work, goes about learning how to fix it, in the meantime buys another one that does work, goes about learning how to modify it.
One year later the non-forum person owns one Boatswain’s pipe, having thrown out the pipe that didn’t work. The forum person owns seventeen pipes in various conditions of repair and has become an expert on the effects of various metals on the pipes’ tone. Has already been cautioned once by a mod at letstalkbosunspipes about questioning other’s choices in beeswax.

Love it, David!!! I did get TWO extras. The original (which didn't work) went back to my conductor, who bought it himself.

Both the ones that I bought work. The one I'm using is a "mil-spec" (I think that's a joke, but it was sort of advertised that way) whistle which indeed does work right out of the box.

Oh, and guess what? I'm picking up bees wax from my friend today who runs an apiary! :)

This process is very typical of many things in the military, in that you recieve a necessary new piece of gear in an "other than usable" condition, and have to bring it up to a servicable standard.

Well, the bugle I got at the Air Force Academy to play in the D&B corps was certainly perfect. My playing, however... :D :D

Now, here's a (big) chunk of beeswax that I got from my beekeeper friend. I'll surely have a lot left over after this surgery. :) :)

Oh, and it smells like heaven. If you like the smell of honey that is!

Now you need a lanyard for some real blackshoe cred!
(y)

From what I understand, that's a real tradition... You have to make your own. I have neither the skills nor the naval history to do that, but I could make something Air Force-y... I just think that might be a little over the top. :D

Whatever I do, I'll surely make it sound right!
