Last holiday season when recovering from COVID I had decided to build a Rangemaster in a faux wood grain table top style enclosure in the old style strip board style construction like the OG rangemaster. Loved the sound but since it wasn’t in a traditional pedal format I sold it to a FB friend who was dogging me for 6 months to make one just like it. So a month ago I began to miss that thick crunch of a RM circuit with my preferred 15nf input cap so I decided to build one with a 6 way switch to change the input cap values from 5nf (stock RM value and too thin for my liking.) to 200nf (too bassy and splatty but it’s there if I need it.) even though in my opinion it seems anything past 47nf starts to sound muddy. Cherry picked a Russian P416N germanium transistor with a gain of 120~hfe and virtually zero leakage and got to work. I like the end result. Here is a sound clip of it on my YT channel.
