Hi All,
Having passed on the M-20, I have found another one that looks worth investigating http://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/msg/1621204703.html I emailed the seller to get some better pictures and the serial number, and hopefully will go have a look at it Thursday morning. I thought it was probably a 12 string version of the D-25, but a little searching shows that those had spruce tops. Any ideas?

Hello twocorgis,

The guitar in the Craigslist ad is a D-212, which is the 12-string version of the D-25, but at that point in time the D-25 had a spruce top. If you want an all-mahogany 12-string you need to look for a D-15-12. You could try to find a D-17-12 but those are really rare.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Hans,

Am I just not looking at it right, or does that guitar in the ad have a mahogany top? My two '70s spruce top Guilds have gotten darker, but not that dark.

Bad form to reply to your own post, but I guess the top is spruced stained cherry like in this picture

Whatever the color of the finish, if it's a D-212, then the guitar will have a spruce top.

Thanks, Hans. I'm waiting to hear back from the seller with better pictures and model/serial number info. That should clear things up quite a bit! :)

Oooooh....I LOVE cherry! (And yes friends I mean the color.) I've already got 3 wives but that could even perk my interest!

You've got 3 wives? Maybe you should trade one in on a Guild.

It's a dead ringer for the '81 D212M I just bought. Mahogany body and neck, arched back, rosewood fretboard and bridge, open tuners, mahogany-stained spruce top. Mine is a nice guitar with a fast neck and decent tone. I got it to amplify. Tom Petty plays (or played) one, so I guess I can at least give it a try.

It's why my girlfriend's so reluctant. She thinks she'd be #4 wife. And well, I haven't figured out how to tell her she's right...
