OK...I've strayed again, this time for a Washburn Rover travel guitar I got off the 'bay. I got it specifically for a family wedding/reunion in CA this summer, the size is just right and the sound won't be that big an issue. Anyway I heard the thud of something being dropped at our front door and cringed because I knew this was due here any day. I open the door and find this on the front porch...

It was with great trepidation that I tore through the stretch wrap to get at what ever would be left of the guitar. Surprise surprise...not a scratch on it! Can't give a full report on the guitar but that case sure did its job. Shoot it spent a week with the USPS...if I have to gate-check it on a small place I certainly won't worry about it. joan

Kudos to Washburn for making durable cases. The opposite end of your packing situation was the excellent job the guy did packing my '73 S-100 Deluxe. The thing was packed so well the UPS guys joked that it could have fallen off a roof and not been damaged. No evidence that they tried to prove that theory ... thankfully.

I've been having good luck with USPS lately..shipped two guitars, one to Idaho and one to New Joisey, USPS Priority mail, which is just like ground with FedEx or UPS, both got there safe and sound in two days.

FNG, I ran into this a ways back, but how are you shipping USPS priority... They wouldn't take a couple of the boxes I've brought to them for priority, and they had to ship parcel post (the *long, slow* way)

Using standard guitar cartons, 47 long, 21 wide, 9 deep. Seems they all weight around 25 pounds. I think the length is the kicker: much longer than 47 inches and it goes parcel post, but I'm not exactly sure of the exact length.

I had a guitar shipped exactly as in the pic. Shrink wrapped around a hard case. Not even a particularly robust case, but same result. Came thru just fine. My nerves took a bit of beating however. :!:

From USPS's Shipping Guidelines:

Parcel Post package:
• Maximum size is length + width around largest point = 130”
Other package services:
• Maximum size is length + width around largest point = 108”

The words 'width around' are awkward; I think they mean 'girth' ... two times width plus two times length ... the distance around ... plus the length.

9" by 21" by 47" = (2 X 9) + (2 X 21) + 47 = (18 + 42 + 47) = 107 ... just under the criteria for Express or Priority service. Over and it's parcel post. I've never had a problem with guitars ... I have gotten dinged for amps.

The more unprotected your package looks the better care they take of it!

It's OK because it went USPS! Now if it had gone UPS  They break guitars even when they are packaged with great care.

I have shipped SO many guitars and I exclusively use the USPS. There has never been an issue with damage and the item usually arrives in two days!

I don't know if they lose money doing it, but man can the government deliver the mail!
