after studying these pics magnified, I have to agree!
Remarkable what changes lighting conditions can bring on...

Yep.

those 2 pictures are of the same guitar in different light (nice catch again, Tex!), however, it is well documented that Petty had 2 different ones (with different rosettes at least) he played live and recorded with, and a third sunburst one displayed at the Hard Rock Cafe. still can't believe this guy is gone. he was the best!

It can't hurt to post a summary again:

Guitar #1: D-212M (mahogany colored spruce top) from the 1981 to 1987 date range.
Light colored bridge, rosette with lacquer over it (?) hence hardly visible, Gotoh closed tuners (?)

Guitar #2: D-25-12 (mahogany colored spruce top) from some time around 1987.
Bridge half dark, half light color. "White" Rosette clearly visible. Different style pickguard (watch area towards bridge). Larger chip or dark spot at the tail end if you imagine to follow the low e string line down to the lower bout. Different tuner buttons.

Guitar #3: Here's a large picture of the burst one that now hangs in the Hard Rock Cafe in Rome:
Note: Very different rosette, different bridge shape, no fretboard markers.

Nice summary SFIV1967!

Never have seen a photo of Tom Petty playing the 'burst, but man is it gorgeous!

Will post pics of mine as soon as I get time to do a full photo session - looking
forward, as it really does look like the Petty 12 with the dark rosette!

Meanwhile, on ebay (no affiliation, just a little bit of excitement) a sweet looking
G212 burst waits for it's next dance partner...
