Maybe this was asked already or maybe it’s a no brainer .

So what type of Mahogany wood is being used on necks these days ? Guild or otherwise , Is it the real stuff or African or other ?

I’m just used to the hog neck discription . 😑

Hmmm. Interesting question. I don't know that I have seen the neck wood specified as specifically WHAT species of wood it is, very often.

Martin has moved to synthetic materials for some of their necks (laminated wood veneers and fiberglass from what I remember), which I think they call Statobond.

Neck woods will vary, a lot of which will be Sapele (african mahogany is the common term, but this isn't a mahogany). You will also see increased use of maple, and going forward, maybe walnut, cherry, ash, and hickory.

What Guild is using right now is anybody's guess, my guess would be Sapele.

My guess is there isn’t much Honduran mahogany in use guitar-wise these days. So we’re looking at African or Asian mahogany-like woods, which can claim to be mahogany but not “genuine” mahogany.

Some guitar makers are calling their neck material, Select Hardwood.
That allows them to change woods as they become available.

We are living in a new would as far as guitar woods are concerned.
Our old favorite woods from years past are no longer available in large quantity.

I see the day when composite guitars will be the norm.
Vintage guitars will be wood.
