My friend Phil Hurley was kind enough to show me his favorite semi-hollow and hollow body guitars:
  • 1967 Gretsch Chet Atkins Country Gentleman (Filtertrons)
  • 1967 Guild Starfire III (Mini Humbuckers)
  • 1980 Epiphone Casino (P-90s)
  • 2014 Gibson Rich Robinson ES-335 (Burstbuckers)

Beautiful guitars. Toward the end of the video you can hear him play the same riffs back-to-back on the different guitars, which really highlights their unique tones.

Wow that is a great comparison! Very interesting. Suprised I may like the Gretsch overall the best. n Neck pickup the Gretsch or the Guild are great. The Casino p90 is great on neck also. Bridge ...dont like the Guild much as compared, more the 335. Of course the reality is you can tweek the EQ for each guitar. But as compared it's a good thing to hear. Comparisons start at 5:35

But, is it a comparison of guitars, or of pickups? With a different type of pup in each guitar we’re not really hearing the differences in guitars, just their pup type.

well, with an electric the pickups are part of the guitar. hardware, strings, pups, wood - it all plays a part. would have been nice to hear some DeArmonds as well

Nice guitars. Very different guitars. Would love to own a SF III like that, do have an equivalent casino which is excellent too.

Good point, But the guitar effects the sound too. In the end, this is mostly useful to compare guitars "as they are"... which is a nice thing.
