Hello All!

Does anybody know how to read the serial numbers on older
Bluesbirds? I've got one serial # CL001246, I was thinking it might be a
'99, but I'm too dumb to figure it out.

It's an absolutely great guitar, and not trying to sell it. However, I do want to
put it on my homeowner's insurance, so I want to be accurate. The condition is
excellent ++, if that's possible. Just a very small amount of tarnishing on the pickup
covers, which is normal. Not a mark or ding anywhere on the body.

Thanks in advance!
Jerry

Hello Jerry,

Your Bluesbird is from the year 1998. Does it have a sunburst finish? If not, can you tell me what color it is?

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Hi Hans-

Thanks for the quick reply!
Yes, it has the sunburst finish, and it's gorgeous.
Are you going to tell me it's worth 10K???????
Might as well wish for something big, right?

Joking aside if it's for insurance purposes start with what you paid for it, and get an actual appraisal.
If something does happen to it, my understanding is that they won't pay you more than what you originally bought it for and possibly less unless you've got an appraisal showing it actually increased in value.
Might vary by state, I have no idea.

Varies by state and policy. Some policies carve out musical instruments and put limits on replacement. Others will let you schedule them but the appraisal requirements vary by company. Others just lump them in with "household goods' with a cap on payments. Companies that only insure musical instruments are supposedly easier to deal with, both in getting a policy and resolving claims, but you might be paying for more coverage than you need if you are not gigging with the instrument or otherwise exposing it to hazards outside the home.

Hi Hans-
Yes, my Bluesbird has the cherry sunburst finish.
Practically mint condition, as is the original case.
Not actively trying to sell it, but you never know.
Thanks!

Bluevoodo,

I suspect Hans would really like to see some pictures. He is the best authority on the subject, and you never know, a photo might end up in his next book !

Could be a "AAA".
Only 3 colors offered on those in '01 and the Cherry 'burst was one of 'em.
Don't know if that was true in '98 but Hans would know for sure.
Think it was that way for a while, though.
AAA version was a $300.00 adder in the '01 price list:

I'm probably too dumb to tell if it's s AAA or not, but I don't
play it much. I do like to just set it out so I can see it, though.
I've been a Rachmaninoff fan for a LONG time. I'm really partial to
Vivaldi's Four Seasons forever. I used to want to play like Segovia,
but that didn't last too long once I actually tried it. Now, I just listen.
I love some good cello music. Pablo Casals has a good CD on the Bach Suites
For Cello, if you like that sort of thing. I'd love to meet YoYo Ma one of these days.
Never got a chance to meet Albert or BB King either.
How are you on hard blues? If you haven't heard of Frank Marino, Tommy Castro
or Jon Lord and the Hoochie Coochie Men, check them out. You probably know them already.
My other Guild is an older F47MCE. I love that guitar! That neck seems like it was made for me.
I'm going to sell my Alvarez Yairi WY-1. No contest between those two guitars.

From that Bluesbird owner's thread I linked to, these are the 3 colors that were offered on AAA tops, in '01 and '02 at least, and I'm guessing for the entire run based on a re-read of that thread just now.
Note what Blue335 calls "Blonde" is actually "Amber":

A blond, a brunette and a redhead! My buddy says they are cheaper than hookers and you can't get diseases but he doesn't know about gas!https://secure.flickr.com/photos/18742897@N08/sets/72157633614082363/

Blond is CL001769
Tobacco Burst is CL002298
Cherry Burst is CL001267

The Cherry 'burst at bottom is absolutely AAA, in fact, I see it's only 21 units away from yours.
The other two have a more "quilted" look but that could very well be due to the angle they were photographed from.
And a few of the later Amber AAA's exhibited such 3D quilting I originally thought the quilted effect was the AAA but found out differently a couple of years later.
Here's a trans black one with less flamboyant quilting effect; courtesy of our member Coastie99:

and Green Blues 90 showing more subdued striping:

Anyway, based on the odds and the color I'd bet yours is a AAA without even seeing it.

Roger all that.
Especially YoYo.

How are you on hard blues? If you haven't heard of Frank Marino, Tommy Castro
Tommy's a local boy! (San Jose)
Used to see him in a couple of the local dives.
:biggrin-new:
But my tastes are running more towards Bela Fleck's Throw Down Your Heart or this guy, lately. (quoted my own post in the "From the store" subforum):
This guy might be the most important modern blues guy I bet 99% of you never heard of yet.
Heard this coming in on the Stanford college station and locked on, one of those tunes that grabbed me by the ears and wouldn't let go:

"Resurrection Blues":

Didn't even know who it was at first so waited for artist credits to be announced and lo and behold he's the artist of the week on the Friday morning blues show.
I feel so vindicated!

That'ds be like a first cousin to my F65ce, same outline but yours'd be a deeper body flatback maple, right?
It's got a 1-5/8 nut which is just a wee bit narrow compared to my ideal 1-11/16, but livable. I think that's the F47's got the 1-11/16, right?
And if it's mid-90's Westerly like my D25, yep, the neck is what made me buy that guitar.

I'm going to sell my Alvarez Yairi WY-1. No contest between those two guitars.
