Help Posting Picture Attachments? Resolved...thanks.

I can't find any window that allows me to upload a picture attachment from my computer.

When I try to post picture attachments from my computer, the "insert image" icon only gives me the option of adding an image from a URL. What am I missing? I'm also not sure why terms listed under "Posting Permissions" (at the bottom of this and every page) says I may "post new threads, post replies, edit posts" but I "may not post attachments"??

I checked the FAQ's and this is what it says: "Below the message box, you will find a button labelled 'Manage Attachments'. Clicking this button will open a new window for uploading attachments. You can upload an attachment either from your computer or from another URL by using the appropriate box on this page. Alternatively you can click the Attachment Icon to open this page".

The problem is that I can't find a button labelled 'Manage Attachments' anywhere or any window that allows me to upload attachments?

What am I missing?

You've got to go through a 3rd party photo hosting site. Since Photobucket shut down all free account sharing, I have found IMGUR pretty user friendly. You'll have to load any pics you want to share here to their site from your image file (free), but then you will have all the attachment code options you'll need to post pics here at LTG.

LTG deliberately does not allow users to save attachments (including images) to LTG's server, but the generic help and FAQs have not been edited to communicate that decision to the two or three people per year who actually look there for help :)

Thanks to all who took the time to answer and point me in the right direction. I posted pics direct from my computer only a few months ago without going through a 3rd party hosting site and assumed that I could simply do so again this time. Things change and now I'm on board again.

Lots of people swear by Imgur and it seems to work well. Back in the day we had Photobucket and ImageShack. When I first joined I just picked ImageShack. Now, mind you I have to pay for their services but after photobucket tanked and we lost SO MUCH history and SO MUCH great information ..... I feel fortunate to have picked it. I pay for the services, but it's not that much and I do post photos here every now and again....... :encouragement::encouragement:

MODERATORS: How hard would it be to make posting pictures easier?

I recently sold a shed on my local Craigslist; I took four pictures with my laptop and posted 'em all on the CL site in less than 30 seconds.

Is it a cost issue; program issue; security issue? It seems like there's more questions about posting pictures on LTG than any other. I've largely stopped posting pics here just because of the "pain in the neck" factor.

Yes posting pics here has been a bit of a nightmare for me also. Just yesterday, after starting this thread and believing I had solved my problem, I posted something on the FS/FT section (a 1954 Guild catalog featured in the Targ & Dinner counter-catalog!). I took 8 great pics and loaded them to the Cloud and then was able to successfully paste them into my thread. When I previewed my post the pics were there. Success...so I thought! Within a short period of time, the pics disappeared from the thread. Unsure why, I tried again by "editing" my post but this time I couldn't load the pics because it said the maximum was 8 pics and I already had 8 pics loaded!! Confused I figured I could just "reply" to my thread and thereby repost the 8 original pics. That also worked...for a brief time...and then my pics disappeared again! So now I'm at a loss. I realize that I can use IMGUR as suggested by others but frankly I don't want to keep signing up for new sites. Other Forums simply allow me to download pics from my computer in seconds. I've spent over an hour at this and am giving up. I appreciate the suggestions made by others and also the frustrations offered by others with posting pics on this Forum.

You have been around long enough that you could probably find an answer if you searched :)

It's Don's policy so ultimately what a Moderator thinks or believes is irrelevant.

I won't claim to give the same answer now that I did last time. It comes down to liability. If LTG does not host pictures then LTG cannot be held liable for pornography, intellectual property theft or any of the other crimes that the operator of a service that hosts pictures can be charged with. If the images are not on LTG's server then the enforcers need to go somewhere else. At one point there were extra costs (that are only paid by Don and voluntary donations) associated with storage and bandwidth which can be avoided by not hosting pictures. Some of those costs would potentially be generated by people who were not LTG members, just people who find images and link to them.

Easier is also a relative term. If you host your pictures elsewhere then linking to them here is a trivially quick operation. LTG does not incur any costs when you, or someone else, choose(s) to share the same picture elsewhere. That would not be the case if LTG hosted pictures directly.

I'd say the policy - which is not mine - gets questioned about once a year but only by people are not maintaining any kind of repository of their photos online.

You being able to see pics you posted in a thread doesn't necessarily mean others can. This can be due to many reasons, but the most common is that you have access to the pic (often passworded) and that's why you can see them and others can't.

If your patience has not been exhausted and you have not given up, when you try and add pictures, try using the Go Advanced button while composing and then Preview Post. If you can't see them, then no one else can. If you can see them and no one else can then you have a permissions problem at your host.

Thanks Frono for YOUR patience...it's helping mine. That said, I used the Go Advanced to post my thread with pics. The problem is, as I've learnt from GAD's posting, is that my Cloud is password protected so while I can see the pics posted, other's can't. I simply need to use a 3rd party hosting site. Under the circumstances, I'd like to find a way to simply delete my post on the FS/FT so I can start fresh...in a few days! Can that be done?

It looks to me like those pics of the bridges were already ".jpg" files with a good craigslist address.
I'm guessing you had the links saved on your computer, and they happened to work correctly when you used the "insert image" function.
Here's a sample address from back then:

https://post.craigslist.org/imagepreview/00d0d_cKt9ElqcAQF_600x450.jpg

Images don't have to be hosted on a hosting site if they're already up as jpg's somewhere else (that isn't password protected), it's only your newly-created images that need a hosting site to be seen here.
Lacking that, you could simply post a link (it'll appear as above) and let viewers decide whether to use it or not.
Anyway, I do believe you've got it now.

BINGO! You absolutely nailed it. I was wondering how I was able to post those bridge pics several months ago and yet unable to post the catalog pics this week? I struggled with this for hours (I mean remembering...too many senior moments these days!) and when I saw your post it all came rushing back...When I had the same problem the last time, I tried to be resourceful and first posted the pics on CL and then copied them to the LTG site. Then I promptly cancelled the CL post. Without completely realizing it, I used CL simply as a "3rd party host" as it's referred to. I;m not too old to learn even if I'm too old to remember! Thank you and Frono for setting me straight. I hope it's the last time.

Me to, assuming you mean the last time Frono while cranky. :wink-new:
It's a genetic characteristic of Fronobulaxis Moderatus, random crankiness..
Heck, seems to be pretty common amongst the rank and file, for that matter.
