My fretless 1971 M-85 didn't come with a case - I always wanted one, and assumed that it would be shaped like a guitar rather than rectangular, not sure why I thought that. I guess because I had a late-60s Starfire with a guitar-shaped case, plus my Les Paul Triumph Bass case is shaped like that. I actually assumed my M-85 would fit in the Triumph case since the M-85 is rather Les Paul-ish, but the headstock is way bigger!

Anyway, a 1971 M-85 was posted on Reverb and it says it comes with the original case - anyone know if they came in rectangular cases?

My M-85 II has a guitar shaped case, black with a blue interior. It fits the bass perfectly, and has a Guild sticker on the side. Mine is a 1973. I’ll take a picture maybe tomorrow so you can see. Do you have any pictures of your M-85?

Star - it makes sense to have one strung with flats, one with rounds, right?

Always ready for an opportunity to show pics! Here is a picture from the eBay auction when I bought it:

And here is it post-Alembicization:

I wish I could get one of the molded ones like yours sounds like. I've had an eye out over the years but it's hard to search for (especially with the new hollow-body M-85 reissues).

Also, now I want that M-85..... Someone remind me that one is enough.

It looks like a great bass, but I would say pass on it because of the price.

That was the end of 60ies case, probably available till the early 70ies. On Reverb this one was called a 1970 one:

This one was shown as 1969:

This one shown as 1974:

Thanks Ralf! Great pics. The first two are the earlier, thicker bodied ones, correct? I wish I could find one of the later solid bodied cases! I just use a gig bag but there's no support for the headstock.

Just for fun, here's a shot of my Les Paul Bass in case:

I'm pretty sure the body seemed like it would fit but the Guild headstock is MUCH bigger.

I never had any of them, so can't say for sure, but to me the cases look the same size just the later blue inside version has this huge block of foam in the top part to hold the thinner body.

Generally the hollow bodied M-85s are thicker and date to 1970 or earlier. The 1971 and later are solid and thinner. The hollows have binding on the top and bottom. The solids have binding on the top only. The solids are more likely to have humbuckers and a "harp" bridge but there are exceptions. What Ralf listed as 1970 and 1969 appear to be hollow. The others solid.

Yeah, the 74 and 75’s have the same case as my 73. Though my case isn’t in as good a shape as those. Then again, neither is my bass. There was another M-85 on gbase that just sold and it had the molded case with the blue interior as well.
