I think I did see strings, maybe 1:10 or so? While it would be funny if playing stringless was a protest against having to lip synch, I do think the strings are there.
Oh, I see them clearly at 4:27 - my bad! But I don't think this is lip-synched...

I agree it sounds live. I was looking for the strings when I had no sound. The no strings reminded me of a .60's clip of Jefferson Airplane which is definitely lip synch'd and Jack Casady has some kind of stuffed animal draped over the neck damping the strings.
Last I heard, Sly was living in a van he parked in a fan’s driveway. His story is a sad one indeed.
