The other day I saw a local place up here where I'm at had an open mic nite. So I said, I'ma go on down there and bring my F30r-ce and play an original song or two, if they let me.
Sure enough, they let me! and in fact I played two originals, and both were well received. Mostly because I had like 6 friends and family supporting me, but probably also because I was the only act that had an instrument. However, I had never played micc'ed up as a solo guitar/singer songwriter for a crowd of strangers before, so their support was helpful.
Now mind you I'm the type of guy that would get up there and sing a suicide karaoke song. So being in front of a crowd speaking, telling jokes or singing is one thing, but playing acoustic guitar in a quiet setting with it amped up where every note can be heard was extremely nerve wracking. Of course thinking so hard trying not to mess up, I did!, three notes in, but no one noticed, lol.
It was a song I wrote for my wife, so it's kind of sappy, heartfelt and I could see the crowd visibly liked it, be-bopping their heads along to the chord progression. Then when I ended, I felt the huge Wphew!, accepted the applause and kind words of the host after and said damn! that was a rush.
Next, they said the guitar was a little louder than the vocals, and I said well I can adjust it and play another song if you like?, And they all agreed. Now I finally felt like I was settled in and could relax. This time I said to myself I'll hit them with the complete opposite feel, more brooding, dramatic and gory, lol. So I confidently started my second song only to mess up my own lyrics on the second verse! , oy vey this performing live is not for the faint of heart. Nevertheless I kept the melody going til I could get back on track and then I of course finished it strong! More applause, man I can't wait to do this again!
Turns out they want to do it every month, so I said I'll see you next month! I'm excited, especially now that I got the first time jitters out of the way, I am already thinking of new original songs to try out for the next one.
Even better, the host then introduced me to a local young lady who sings and produces, and she might need a guitarist, or I may need a singer, so who knows what may come of that? I'm game since you only live once.
Who else does open mic nite and do you play covers, or originals?
