I haven't seen this one up close, but M-80's are sah-weet. Someone should go give it a test drive.[/quote]

This is a sick guitar; it sounds absolutely brutal. I'd like the take one of the XR-7 pups out and throw it into one of my other guitars, but I want to keep the M-80 all original for the next owner. If anyone has a XR-7 they're looking to sell or trade, lemme know. The only reason I'm selling this is to pay off my bank overdraft! I'm planning on recording a few songs, and have to do it now so I can record with the M-80 before it sells!

Congrats Adam. I see it sold. Too bad you had to sell it. They are great guitars. I have one in the brown tobacco burst. There are quite a few models from that period that used XR-7s (Models X-79, X-82, S-25, S-250, S-275, even on Starfires one year.) So you should be able to find another guitar with them. I have, on occassion, bought XR-7s in pairs and individually on eBay. So, you may get lucky and see some on eBay.

Thanks. I was hoping to get more for it, but after listing it a couple times at a higher price without sale, $600 seemed to be fair. It seems like the type of rare guitar that is rare enough not to be well known, but once you play one, you realize what the fuss is about.

Someone on the forum contacted me w/ a XR-7 for sale, but he isn't sure if it works and doesn't have a meter to test the resistance (to figure out if it was made for the neck or bridge).

I think for me the next best thing to a Starfire with HB-1's would be a Starfire with XR-7's. For example, this one.

Whoa tonepoet! That's a crazy list in your siggie. Welcome to LTG!

So in traditional LTG fashion, I have to initiate a veer. I've never heard XR-7s. What are they like? Two semitrucks being rubbed together by a giant robot? Zeus' thunderbolt spearing a power plant? Dodger stadium filled with with 3000 Dimebag Darryl impersonators?

Do tell?

They are one of the most brutal sounding pups I've ever heard/played. Extremely heavy, but can also achieve crisp cleans (very versatile). I have a Bill Lawrence L500XL (Dimebag pup) in my '94 Epi LP; the XR-7 has a darker tone.

All XR-7s I've measured are about the same. There wasn't a bridge and neck model. Just the one that measured about 8.75K or so. Love coil-cut too. Very clean single coil sound.

jp: The humbucker mode can be wonderfully overdriven as described in above posts. Singing sustained leads, big chords and the clean tone is excellent. Crisp highs and clear lows. No mud or muffly bass in these hummers. Also, as I've mentioned above, in split coil mode they are a 4.5K single coil with a nice glassy clear tone. My M-80 came with a stock coil-cut switch, which is where I first experienced their single coil tone.

Comparing to Bill Lawrences, I hear them as being like the L500-L

As to my list of Guilds, I'm in a divorce that's been dragging on over 3 years and she's after my guitars too. I'm trying to hang on to them all though !!!!

Have fun,

qvart: Yeah I saw that Starfire and started to salivate. Can't part with the cash right now, but that model with XR-7s is on my wish list. That one looks to be quite mint.

Have fun,

Sorry to hear it, bro...that can't be any fun at all. :( On a related note, though...I am sure there are plenty of people here that would volunteer to, umm...'hide' your guitars for you until the process is complete.
