I think that would make me claustrophobic.
I had that concern also at the start but as you can see in the photos below there was a lot of room!
It would be the noisyest run all echoing in t
At the State line halfway through the tunnel, there were quite a few cheers (and selfies!) Then on the way back the Police recruits were coming the other way and they were doing their singing/chanting that they do when they run. Overall, it really wasn't that loud.
Congrats!
Do they shut down the tunnel?
Well there are three tubes and they shut down the South Tube at midnight. Then they turn up the ventilation system and de-grease the roadway! They separate the roadway to the South Tube from the traffic of the other two tubes with a line of heavy trucks.
There are actually two runs as they split the field to make things more manageable. The first group were the under 30 minutes runners and they started at 8:00 am. Then they have a "sweep van" to pick up any stranglers. Since I was still rehabbing I choose the over 30 minute group even though I was hoping to run "sub-30". Our run was slated to start at 8:45. As we were queuing up there were people still emerging from the tunnel at 41 mins with the van behind them!
I ran a 29:13.
The annoying thing is my PR for a 5K is 25:09. So if I wasn't still re-habbing and could run fun speed I could have finished first in my age group!
Here's a photo from facebook page of my local running club of the NJ side of the tunnel:
These are a couple official photos from last year:
Hopefully I'll be able to find a couple of photos of me when they publish this years photos!
